Using oven to get oil out of bowling ball...
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:07:34 AM »
Wanted to know if anyone is still using this trick to get your ball back to its glory days and two, does it harm your ball? I have an older Ebonite XXL that I got new and I love it to death! But, I'm realizing that this PBA Experience league, is gonna give me and my equipment help when it comes to the oil. So, out side of cleaning after every use, can I use the oven trick at home, or do I need to take it to a proshop? Thanks in advance.

NO! Have your pro shop rejuvinate it or if they dont have that, put it in a bucket with hot soapy water.

The revivor is your best option.I suggest you set the Temp to 130 deg.At that temp is what usbc stated in their ball motion study was a same temp.Depends on how much oil that is in your ball will determine how much time it will need to be in the revivor.Find a shop in your area that has a revivor. At my shop we offer a yearly maintenance package that makes it affordable.

The REVIVOR or REJUVENATOR at the proshop is always the #1 choice, as it was designed specifically for this purpose. Lacking one of those, I would personally opt for the dishwasher method as a second choice.

As was stated above, I have used it several times myself, and it really does seem to work for me. I tried the hot water bucket method on an INFERNO, but got no results until I ran it through the dishwasher, then it sprang back to life.

Also, ONCE, I had a ball that was TOTALLY DEAD, and NOTHING seemed to work. So, having NOTHING TO LOSE, I left the ball in the car under a dark colored towel ( to block direct sunlight ) and washed it every evening with a STRONG degreasing agent. After 5 days it stopped bleeding, so I made sure it hadn't been softened by the degreasing agent, then had it resurfaced. The ball was perfect, but I would'nt recommend the method I used here unless it was an absolutely LAST RESORT, because the heat could've cracked the ball and the degreaser could've softened it if over-exposed to it.  The ball in question was going to be a total loss otherwise, so I had nothing to lose by trying it.

rejuvinators have a gauge to shut the lamp off at 100. Well the one in our shop did. There is no point in trying to save money and end up having to spend $200 for a new ball

I have heard of the dishwasher. I dont personally know anyone that has done it but I dont think that conditioner (lane oil) could be good for your diswasher or for its draining. I strongly suggest a rejuvinator or a bucket with hot dish water.

Thanks for all the replies people! It is greatly appreciated. Wanted you to know, that I washed two of my balls in the sink. Hot water soap and everything. Let them drip dry afterwards and I did notice a big difference after the cleaning.

Exactly how do you perform the dishwasher method? I have a Total NV that is totally dead.

An oven at home will work safely "IF" it is a CONVECTION oven set at 130-140 degrees. Convection ovens blow hot air and heat evenly. We had a Kitchen-Aid Convection Oven and it worked perfectly. I used it on all of my balls and never had a single mishap with it.

We recently sold our home and bought another and unfortunately, it doesn't have a convection oven, so I don't know what I am going to do now. I have never seen any positive results with the hot water method and I am unaware of any revivors in my area.

The Revivor and hot dish water have always worked the best for me.
