The ONE and a warm day in the car (a bit long)
« on: May 01, 2007, 01:36:35 AM »
Yesterday, in NYC, it was a warm and sunny day.  I had put my bowling gear in the trunk of my car due to the fact I might have to work late and would not have time to go home to pick it up.  I know, not a good idea, but I normally don't leave it in the car.  The car was parked under a tree so for most of the day it was shady.  It is a white car and it wasn't that hot when I got into it at the end of work.

When I got to the bowling alley, I opened my bowling bag, and to my amazement, there was heavy oil all over the ball and the microfiber ball carrier it was in was soaked through to the point that there was oil on the insides of my bowling bag.  This was only about 6 games after the last hot water bath treatment.

I am very meticulous with cleaning this ball, it has approximately 200 games on it.  I clean it before and after every session, I give it hot water baths after every 20 - 25 games, or when I notice the reaction changes.  My bath procedure includes 1 15 minute bath with dawn and hot tap water, 2 or 3 plain hot water baths to remove the oil and soap residue till no oil appears on water surface.  Then I will use Energizer ball cleaner and allow the ball to dry out overnight.  I also touch up the surface with factory finish polish when the ball tends to move early.

After I cleaned it up, I noticed that the ball was going about 6 feet longer on the lanes and turning unbelievably hard, very much like it did the first few times I used it.  Over time, the ball has mellowed some in its move, but it is still very strong, covering the same amount of area on the lanes.

My question is this, could the amount of oil that was obviously soaked into the ball's track areas be enough to actually change its core dynamics and affect its roll, even with the cover being very clean and well maintained?

I also believe I have to reassess my cleaning regimen and any suggestions for modification will be welcomed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, it got a bit long, but
I wanted responders to have as much info as possible.

As far as cleaning, I'd suggest hitting the surface a light scuff to open up the pores prior to the hot water bath.  Then you can reapply the polish once finished.

I noticed a big difference in the amount of oil coming out of the ball, when I started giving the ball a light scuff before the bath.

This brings up a question, how much of this is oil, and how much might be polish? Can the polish be coming off the ball at a certain temperature?

Rest in peace my friend, and thanks for all the great memories.
You are truly missed!

I do keep the ball in a highly polished state.  I assumed that it was mostly oil because of the slickness of the liquid.  After cleaning up the mess, the ball was still very shiny so I don't think it was the polish coming off the ball.  Also, I have experimented with the cover prep on the ball and its reaction was definitely consistent with its polished state as opposed to when I threw it unpolished.

My league has two weeks left, I was considering having it resurfaced after league ends.  I will still have it done and discuss this episode with my driller, for his comments, thoughts, and suggestions.
