Is Ebonite ball death still an issue?
« on: October 21, 2016, 12:12:06 PM »
Until about 2008 I threw a lot of Ebonite.  I went away from them because I wanted to try several other companies and I did feel that a few of my Ebonite balls had indeed died.  Over the last couple of years I have been intrigued by a few of their releases and have thought about giving them another try.

So, the question is simply: how is the longevity of some of their more recent offerings?  Is there a particular coverstock that you loved or would avoid?

Thanks in advance

No, ball death is not an issue. The strongest covers still require more maintenance, but that is true of every company

I feel the Ebonite "ball death" issue was a product of ignorance of proper ball maintenance.  Not until issues of balls dying did the public start evaluating why they were dying and what caused it.

Now, every company has balls that will "die" if not maintained properly.  And because of Ebonite's unfair characteristic, we now have a better idea of how to do that.

I have been throwing them pretty much for the last 6 years when the original Mission came out and have not had any issues with any ball dying that I took care of.  I still think I could grab any of my retired balls out and they would play the same as when I put it away.

Las time I saw anything related to any "ball death" with an Ebonite was with the Mission X and the Pursuit series. After that, they went back to the lab to figure out what to do about it.

Since then, the Ebonite balls I've used, the Challenge and Pivot, have been solid. I only recently swapped out the Pivot for a pair of strong Solids in the Warrior Supreme and Scandal, and brought in the Gamebreaker MVP for the hybrid. Scandal Pearl and Mission Unknown are going to round out the bag, with casting an interested eye in the Maverick.

Since you have only referenced your arsenal as 10 lb. plastic balls, I also am interested in your response.  Please tell us what three Ebonite balls you have or previously had that "died".  Thank you and I await your reply.

Those were already dead when you bought them predrilled at Kmart.
