Ive been averaging about 210 with a maxim, wanting a ball that will carry a little better but with the same look as the maxim, maybe just a tad stronger. Any recommendations?

The ONLY ball I can think of that would be a TAD stronger than a MAXIM might be a polyester ball with a weightblock, like the Lane1 xxxl.

A MAXIM is just a regular polyester ball with a pancake weightblock and the XXXL is a polyester ball with a diamond shaped core.

Or, just MAYBE, a polyester ball with a softer cover MIGHT be just a tad stronger than the MAXIM.  If you could find an older version of Columbia 300's YELLOW DOT, that might fit the bill.

As a last resort ( for something just a tad stronger than a MAXIM), you might look for a very hard, polished urethane ball designed for very little hook potential ( i.e. Grey ANGLE, polished Black HAMMER, Pink HAMMER but these are old, hard to find, and highly sought after).

By todays standards, the MAXIM isn't a dynamic ball in any way, and is considered little more than a spare ball. Not many performance balls directed at that end of the market anymore.

How does the tornado line do? I match up nice with the maxim im just scared I could be averaging 230 with a stronger ball. I have slower ball speed and high revs so I can't use these strong balls that are on the market today.

The razor is not a weak ball it is very strong of the dry. I would try a urethane groove or a natural with some polish.

Silly questions, I know, but how is the MAXIM drilled and what is the surface finish on it?

Its drilled with the pin between the thumb hole and fingers in the middle, yes im averaging 210 with it, just think I could average alot more with a reactive coverstock. I might pick up a tornado and try it out hopefully it won't be too strong for me.

Second that. A polished urethane Groove is IMHO the smallest step up from a pure pancake polyester. The cover has a tad more traction, but definitively less and less spontaneaous than entry level reactive balls like the Tornado or Razyr. Cheap. Basically an arcing piece, should give you a very similar look to your current ball.

The other option is Lane #1's XXXL or Starburst. Slick polyester cover, but with a dynamic core that (potentially) gets the ball into a roll. Higher price tag, effective dry lane ball.

The new Amf Smoke may be the ticket. I also like the Natural.

If you have a Dick's sporting goods store near you, go there and pick up an Ebonite Blue Nitro Urethane Pearl. It is the next strongest ball above your maxim but can only be found at sporting good stores. Everything else will be a big jump in strength.

If you doubt the possibility, run a dryish 30ft shot 8 to 8 and I'll average 210 with one as well.

Scoring isn't always about core dynamics or reactive resin.  It is about how much friction you can generate. And, on some of todays synthetic finishes, with low volume and short length walled up, 210 is totally possible with a MAXIM.

Now, about the O.P., anything you get with a reactive cover is going to be a pretty different animal than the MAXIM is. The reactive is more sensitive to the amount of oil on the lane, and generates MUCH more friction on dry conditions than the polyester MAXIM.
