Title: Why do they even bother?
Post by: Doug Sterner on November 01, 2011, 01:42:53 PM
I saw that my supplier had Mission 2.0 X-outs listed for a decent price so I decided to grab a couple. One ball was 15-5 gross, 2-1/2 oz top and a 1-2" pin. The other ball is 15-3, 4 oz top, and a 4-5" pin.
The 1-2" pin ball has the cg on the OPPOSITE side of pin from the mass bias! Also the mass bias is in the Ebonite logo on the "top" of the ball. Now....what the heck am I supposed to do with that? I mean seriously...the MB is 180* from where it is "supposed" to be....13-1/2" away. I suppose I could do a pin under ring and put the cg in the bridge and get the MB on the VAL but it just seems that the ball is going to have some big finger weight in it and very little side.
The other ball has the cg kicked out of line by 2" to the right. That doesn't seem so bad except that the 4 oz of top weight will mandate a HUGE weighthole to remove the excess side created if the pin is anywhere right of the fingers and the MB anywhere right of the strong position.
Why do they release such balls for sale? I would think that the issues created by the drilling difficulty and potential poor ball reaction would far outweigh the benefit of putting a couple greenbacks back in their pockets.
Opinions?????

Any chance of spinning them up on a Determinator? I am interested to see if those are the actual axes.

I got a couple of Taboos earlier in the year and they both spun up fine....the cg's were out of line, that's all. Neither of them was anything like these though.....

Seemed like they warned you but you still bought them. Why?
Caveat emptor.

Scotts.....
Due to my economically depressed area where my shop is located, I have purchased various blems over the years for my customers. The Storm/RotoGrip blems have been good, the Lane 1 blems have been label issues and even the $900 worth of Ebonite blems I bought a few years back yielded only 1 "bad" ball....a One Pearl with pin-cg-MB 90* out of whack. The rest of the balls I got then were merely low tops or long pins or slight coverstock imperfections (like the playmaker I had....3-1/4" pin with 3-3/4 top wt...the blem was a rough spot around the pin where the colors didn't swirl smoothly. So, why would I be overly concerned about getting lemons now????
The one ball is obviously a great ball for a lefty...can create a strong mass bias and pin position without needing a balance hole. But I mean c'mon...the cg on the opposite side of the pin from the MB??????

EBI originally use to mark the MB above the pin on some of their first assymetric bowling balls back in the day.
So when you had the ball it was
MB
pin
CG
With your x-out I would draw a line from the MB through the pin a total of 13.5" on the other side of the ball and mark that spot and use it. I think Visionary use to have something similar with their equipment.
As far as the ball with the cg 2-3" left or right of the line between the pin and mb that just limits the ball in most cases to being for a right handed bowler or left handed bowler. No big deal, and certainly no reason not to still sell them off for others to buy at a cheap price. That is why they are x-outs.

You bought balls that you knew were 2nd's at the price you thought was fair. Am I understanding , they were too flawed? What would you think is acceptable at a discounted price?

Just a hint. The MB mark is the mark for an axis, not a fixed point. An axis goes all the way through a ball.

My friend got a Mission Domination X - Out just like yours and we contacted the eastern rep for Ebo and he said draw a line from the marked MB through the pin and measure the 13 1/2" over and make a mark, this will be the new MB and we work just fine. I scribed an X where the new MB is, drilled it pin under, no weight hole and it rolled great..just as if it was a first run ball. So there are ways to drill X outs with no problem.

Doug,
As mentioned previously in this post, the MB runs all the way through the ball so you can just mark the spot directly opposite the marked mass bias and use that. However, since the top weight is on the low side, you can get away with moving the CG around a little more. Using Powerhouse Blueprint, I have come up with a few options:
Hope this helps.

Thanks JK....I did almost exactly what you listed in option 2.....the pin is under the bridge and the cg is above the middle finger. Luckily I drilled the fingers deep enough to avoid excess fingerweight and it's all good. The reaction is very unique...in fact the bowler doesn't trust the ball yet since it looks so radically different from what he's used to.
Trust will come.
Thanks again to all that had positive input....
