Espionage Mini-review
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:48:23 PM »
So I've had a chance to throw this ball now on a few occasions, and I'm very impressed. I've thrown it on everything from a fresh house shot to a pretty tough sport condition, to a blown out house shot. Admittedly, the burnt up shot was not this ball's strength. Not clean enough through the heads for that stuff. On the fresh stuff though it's clean through the heads, excellent mid-lane read, and a consistent, hard-arcing backend reaction.

I'm really excited to throw this ball more, the hitting power and carry was outstanding. Overall hook was much greater than expected. Very similar overall hook as my Brutal Nightmare.

I've got it drilled 4 1/2" X 4". I would not hesitate to recommend this ball to anyone from average league guy to tournament bowler. Can't wait to throw it at states next weekend on the Beat'n Path. I think it'll be a beast on that pattern.

Stole my "thunder", Matt. ;D
I just got mine on Saturday and am getting it drilled this week.

So how much oil did yours "like" to see?
What other balls handled this much oil and how do they differ from the Espionage?

Mine came "2000 grit", but technically, it appears much smoother than that. I may take it to a "true" 2000 grit with my own abrasives (500, 1000, then 2000 grit pads).

I'm going to try mine on  my sport league pattern next Monday. Then depending on what I see, I may shine it for my house shot league.

I actually thought the same thing about the surface. Box and info says 2000, looks to be more like 4000. I tried it as it was first, and I'm glad I didn't change it.

To answer your questions, I have a Pink Panther that's drilled almost identically. Very similar in my opinion. The difference is the Panther has a touch more mid-lane, and not quite as drastic a move off the dry. What that translates to, for me, is that I'm able to throw the Espionage a little deeper into the set.

The sport pattern that I threw it on was 42 feet, heavy volume. The Brutal really didn't have enough midlane, the Panther had a little too much, and not quite enough a move on the backend to kick out corners for me. The Espionage was perfect. I threw it comfortably for 3 games and didn't sacrifice carry at all.

As far as overall hook, I'm almost able to play the same line as the Brutal, maybe about 2 boards less, but definitely has a more readable reaction. Not as skid-snappy.

I'm honestly very happy with this ball. It's hit is impressive. The sound is different. That's always a good sign. My pink panther throws pins around like this ball does, but with a little more entry angle that the Espionage gives me carry is better. Great ball.

Excellent comparison, Matt.
That's just the type of telling info this web site needs so much more of. Thank you.
Now I'm sure that my idea for its drilling will be pretty close to what I want to see from this ball.
