I have a better understanding of Faball's death now. I picked up a red reactive hammer from ebay because I was looking for a mellow resin ball that would arc and hit. I have had really good success with older resin balls in the past because they are not so jumpy but still hit.
I was initially pleased with the Red's reaction. It didn't hook too much and was easy to keep in the pocket due to its even nature. I didn't carry well with it in practice but I wrote that off as a fluke. I bowled 6 more games with it tonight and I now know that this balls poor hit is not a fluke. First let me say that I have left no 8 or 9 pins with this ball in about 10 games. I usually leave these taps frequently due to a high rev rate. This tells me that the ball is deflecting a lot more than my other balls. Secondly, I was averaging 3 ten pins a game. I average about 1 a game normally. I was even leaving 4 pins on light hits. No drive at all. No messengers are to be seen. No recovery to the right and little hold in the middle were to be seen despite an easy house shot. Splits are your normal result when you make a mistake. Very sensitive to release or speed changes. All in all this ball is a stinker.
Now this ball cost me $75 drilled so while I'm a little annoyed it isn't really that big of a deal. I have a Spirit coming that I hope will replace the Red reactive hammer successfully.
Had I payed top dollar for this ball in the mid nineties I would be PI$$ED OFF!!
Other balls from that era from other companies were so much better than this piece of crud. This would have soured me on Faball for years.
I know that Faball put out many other quality balls after this stinker but they also released the Synactive Sledgehammer and the 2001 Blue and Black hammers which were almost universally loathed. Every bad ball released sours more people on that company.
I know the 3D/4D/Sledgehammer/nasty nails and Spikes were liked but I guess it was just to few winners and too many losers. If Faball had just released fewer stinkers they would still be here today.
