which old hammer for dry/spare
« on: July 19, 2003, 11:05:08 PM »
I looking to get a 14lb ball for spares and extreme dry, and there are 3 NIB old hammers on ebay.

pink hammer
red pearl hammer
blue pearl hammer

which of these would be the best. in the old days I had a blue pearl hammer with axis wt. It destroyed shout oil. I had a red pearl that was all back end.

I never had a pink. what your vote?

Go for the Blue Pearl. The bidding is likely to get outrageous on the pink one. On today's oils, it's hard to believe you would find dry enough conditions which would allow you to tell the difference between the blue pearl and the pink.

I don't see how you can go wrong with any of them.
A couple of things, if I may:
- the pink is a solid, but it does hook very little. A friend loved his as a strike ball, but has a decent amoutn of revs. YOu might have to be a littl emore careful with this solid as opposed to the pearls, IF you throw your normal strike ball and do not flatten it out.
- the pearls are the original 2 piece Hammers; as such, they will go longer than the pink and hook more at the backend, WHEN USED AS STRIKES balls. Again, you really only have to be careful if you throw your strike ball release at spares.

They all hook much less than any resins.

The pearls can be made to skid 65 feet, while the Pink (what an awful color!) will be moderate throughout its arc and roll. I suppose it can polished.

- Hammer is currently selling a red pearl Hammer, new, but it has a 3 piece pancake core. It is a spare ball and is designed as such. It should hook a little less than the EBAY balls which are original old time Hammers, with 2 piece cores.

- the old red pearls supposedly hooked more than the Blue Pearl Hammer. Nowadays that difference should be totally trivial.

That's all I got. Good luck.

yeah, pink hammer was an awesome ball, but bids get way out of hand when they show up on ebay.  I've seen some that have fetched well over $100 before all was said and done.

Both of the pearls were somewhat of a rarity in the 80's- they showed up from time to time, but I never saw many people using them.  They did take to a high polish real well in the couple of instances I saw them used on toast.  If you go for the red pearl, make sure it is the original and not the newly issued pancake block version...

But wouldn't that be a viable option if he can get it cheap, since what he wants is s spare ball? It should hook less than the "real" ped pearl Hammer on Ebay.

ct, he did say "spare ball and for extreme dry" so he is looking for something that will hit too....

Omega,

I have a NIB 14# Blue Pearl here. I can most likely sell it to you for less than you'd pay on ebay.

I also have access to the original blue urethane Nail which is like the pink but just a hair softer coverstock.

Drop me an email if interested!!!!

Since the other use was going to be toast, my personal preference would be the original.  When I can, I attempt to avoid pancakes on toast except as a last resort...hence the caveat.

I have a 15lb Blue Pearl that I bought from Doug last year.  You can't go wrong for a spare ball and playing the dirt.

Good Luck!

Sorry, Michelle. Agreed - if you MUST have also something for burnt heads (not just very dry), then I'd suggest either the red or the blue ORIGINAL pearl Hammer. I have a blue, but I rarely use it.
(I still find a modified release or speed is better on a super mild resin for dry lanes than any urethane. If necessary, I go to my Blue Dot if my Blue Hot Flame was too dry. It never has been. The Blue Hot hooks like a White Dot on sterioids.)

I used tp throw NOTHING but the old Hammers, and without a doubt, and unequivicably the answer is the PINK Hammer.  It was the HARDEST ball made by Faball, I know this because I had one, and I was friends with a tech that use to work for them when they were Faball.  It would have to be bone dry and sanded lanes for that ball to hook.

I agree.  Scrambled eggs on toast is much better.

Saw mill,
Bought the Blue Pearl from Doug. If it is to strong I will take your advice and seek out a pink.

Charlest,

I agree on mild resin and weak release. For this summer I was using a 15lb Blade pearl drilled 135 deg. pin above bridge.

this is the ultimate dry ball for me when my speed is up. I can actually kill this ball like the old days . dead straight on the dryest lanes. it's just speed and oil sensitive. I don't even have to kill in on a fresh shot but on dry I'm swinging 30 out to 7. I just can't get the ball speed up.

I need to just get back to the basics and going to 14lb will let me increase my speed without forcing it. giving me better form while I work on getting my legs back. plus a weak ball with speed will allow me to get my "A" game back on track.

I will hang on to the last 2 15lbs balls ( blade pearl and blade particle)I bought unless I just can't put 14lb away. then I will just replace those 2 with 14lb version.

thanks to all others!
