Resurface question.
« on: April 02, 2009, 12:08:51 AM »
I finally replaced my blue Faball Hammer with a new reactive ball. To get some action out of the old ball I had sanded it with a 220 grit sandpaper and then smoothed it with a green scotch-brite pad (by the way this ball hooked like crazy this way). I am ready to turn the old hammer back into what is was meant to be but I have no idea what surface qualities it should have. I thought I would take it to my pro-shop some time and have it resurfaced properly but I don't know what to tell him to do to it. I am sure he probably knows but I am curious myself.

FYI in general you shouldn't go from 220 grit to 600 grit (green pad). 600 will smooth it out a little but not much. There's too big a gap in the grit level. These low number are very rough in terms of bowling balls. You should probably do 220, 320, 400 and then 600 grit next time. If you weren't doing on a spinner, you probably shouldn't do that anyway.

I think the Blue Hammer was in the 600 - 800 grit US range. I'd ask the pro shop to take it to 600 grit, but tell him what you did so he knows where to start.

The Blue Hammer was definitively matte. When I had mine plugged and re-drilled, my pro shop took it to 800 grit wet sanded and I was told that this was pretty much the original finish at its time (and I this has high credibility).
