Did you notice the category that this guy is selling it under:
Sporting goods > BOXING > other

So someone casually looking in BOWLING related sections probably won't find it.

My question, not knowing this beforehand, is why , in the name of ____, would this simpe balance cost over $700 new?????
Other than the fact that's intended for "bowling", that is ....

Charlest, it's probably like the cost of Drugs nowadays. For example, a generic brand if available might cost 60 cents per pill, a name brand $1.00 per pill, and if you receive this pill while hospitalized, $3.00 per pill.
