Please Include Spans
« on: August 04, 2004, 11:23:09 AM »
I'm on here at least twice a day looking for balls to try and I've made very successful transactions, I love this site.....I'm sure there are others like me and would love to avoid plugging and redrilling a ball.....So I'm asking...Could you guys please include spans when posting f/s  f/t entries?

Most people on here dont include them because not many people have the same span, so most people plug and redrill used equipment to fit THEIR span correctly. A span thats off, even by a little bit can mess with you bad.

I would also like to see spans listed with the ball b/c if it is close enough I would still try it.

This is the most incredible post ever!

The fact that people use balls that don't fit their hand to save a few bucks.

Do it right!  Bowl good!

I also think this is a good idea. Personally I don't like using plugged balls so if I do buy a used ball I get one thats close enough to my span so my ball driller can just use a bigger thumb slug to make the adjustment.

I didn't mean to stir up any hornets....I just assumed others were buying these balls as I do (to experiment with).....This is just my second year of bowling and I'm still at the excited stage, wanting to throw everything out there.  My span is a common 4 3/4" and if I can get something close to it, I'll just match up the finger inserts and throw a thumb slug in her and bowl.  The balls I get from here are not normally the balls I use in league or tournaments, so you're right I don't want to pour alot of money into them.  Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone about the span entry....just thought it would help some of us sell and buy equipment.

I don't buy that many used balls but the ones I have bought were close to my span and my pro just put in a bigger slug to move the thumb. Obviously it not a good idea to throw a ball that doesn't fit but why is it on these boards that when someone doesn't agree with a post they slam the poster?

After seeing hundreds of these posts over the past few years my thought it you've got to be kidding me!

Not to knock this guy in particular and I understand people wanting to save money.

Yeah, it was close only off 1/4 inch in span and the pitch was reverse and I use forward, well it was close.

As a golfer who insisted on every club being gripped the same, same size same alighnment etc.  If I'm bowling serious and I want to do well every ball has the exact same pitch and span.  If I'm just throwing a ball to see reaction it doesn't matter much.

I also prefer to purchase balls with a similar span to mine for a couple reasons:

1.  I can use a bigger slug to fix the span to mine.
2.  Doing so will not affect the value of the ball (since plugging a ball can lower the resale value anywhere from 5 to 20 bucks).
3.  I also buy balls just to try different reactions. I don't want to plug a ball just to see if I will like an early roll or skid/snap reaction.
4.  I have some friends or regular business partners with my span and they may want the ball if I don't like it. This way they can try it.

I don't buy balls with my span to save cash, but to ensure that the ball remains at top quality for either me or whoever I sell or trade the ball.

I think spans should be posted because I send about 5 messages a week asking people about spans.

ALSO, think that drill patterns should be posted. I hate buying an aggressive ball which is drilled non-aggressive. It defeats the purpose of the ball. I then either have to deal with a reaction I don't like, plug the ball, or get rid of it when I really wanted it.

I think that these should be included in all post:

Name of ball (DUH!!!)
Weight (DUH!!!)
Span (Saves the trouble of asking)
Drill Pattern (Couldn't hurt, maybe even the reaction given)
Condition & Any noticable marks (It's only courtesy)
Grips or Slug?(It affects the span and some people must have these)

Just my opinion. Man I wrote a lot!!! lol

I have been on this board for a couple of years to and get tired of seeing the same posts but there are always going to be new members who are going to bring up old topics. In no way am I saying for anyone to buy a used ball and use it without having a pro make sure the span and pitch is correct. My span is 4 1/4 and I have bought balls from Lane21, Shaggy and Doug Sterner that were so close that all my pro had to do was put a bigger thumb slug to adjust the span and pitch and put in the correct size finger grips. This cost me $15.00. New balls go for anywhere from $125.00 to over $200.00 in a pro shop. I have not paid over $75.00 for a used ball on this site and all had very few games on them and were in great condition. This is a big cost savings and allows me to try a lot of different balls.
