Black Widow
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Featuring the High Mass Bias Gas Mask core with flip block and Violent Reactive coverstock, the Black Widow goes long and attacks violently on the backend. There''s no lane condition out there that''s safe.

I got the BW about six weeks ago, and at the same time I had Total NV punched up.  Both are drilled to go long and snap.  I'm a right-handed stroker playing a bit inside, but pretty much a straight up the gut thrower.  Ever since I got both balls it's been a constant back and forth in my league (lanes are synthetics, usually medium-oil shot) to decide what ball comes out of the bag first.  I'm averaging about 225 with both balls, and my average has jumped from 198 to 205 in this time period.

The BW is a few boards stronger, and angled out wider than the NV, has a really ferocious snap at the breakpoint.  When I first got the ball, my driller handed the ball to me, hot off the press for the third game, and I threw 258 with no sweat -- very light hits carried, and the flush hits blew the pins straight back so fast they seemed to just vanish.  I really do love this ball for what it does, especially on fresh oil.  But the TNV, though a few boards weaker, has a fabulous, absolutely predictable read at the breakpoint, making it so easy to adjust quickly when the lanes dry out a little, without wasting a shot getting lined up.  I've had problems with the BW on this account:  transition can mean a few splits, which kills a game.  So having both balls in the bag makes for a really complementary arsenal.  Last time out I shot 729, first two games with the BW, then after a split in the first frame of the last game, the TNV was just great.  It's kind of like being a baseball manager with a stud starter to carry most of the game, and an equally stud closer.  Interesting that these two pretty incredible balls came out of the Ebonite/Hammer tent at about the same time.

Hammer Black Widow - 16#
Label Drill
Pin next to ring finger
Pin to PAP 4"
Medium Revs Stroker

Bought my Black Widow a couple of months ago.  So far I have put roughly 40 games on the ball with no loss of reaction.

Lane Conditions:
THS: Medium oil to 42' with sloppy backends
Gold Coast: Nice medium to Heavy THS: Crisp backends

Expected Reaction: I was looking for a ball to replace my very old El Nino Gold.  The Black Widow matched up the specs for RG and RG diff almost exactley.  I expected to get a similar ball motion on the lanes with this ball.  I got exactley what I was looking for only a bit more angular off the break point.

Delivered Reaction: The Black Widow picks right up where my El Nino Gold left off, the only difference is that the Black Widow is a little bit stronger on the back end, and handles the sloppy backends even better than the Gold.

Hook: The ball clears the heads nicely, picks up a little bit of roll in the mids then hooks very hard on the back end. Exactley what I was looking for.

Versatility: I have not found a shot where I have not been able to use the Widow.  IT is by far the most versitile ball I have ever owned.

Control: Easliy the most controlable ball I have ever rolled.  It's easy to make adjustments as the lanes dry out when you know you can trust the ball reaction.

Overall Score on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 Being the Best)
Hook: 9
Carry: 10
Control: 9
Overall: 9.5

I bought this ball after alot of research, and I am very glad I did.  The last ball that I purchased new was a scorchin Inferno, and I was not at all happy with that ball.  This ball however has suprised me each week with it's versatility and controled hook.

I would recomend this ball to just about anyone.

I am a Left Handed bowler that throws the ball with med. revs.  I got my Black Widow drilled agressive with an axis hole.  After I got it drilled I immediately practiced with it on league conditions.  I bowled a 769 series (236,300,233) with this ball straight out of the box.  This ball is very agressive and destroys the pins.  I would miss my mark on the lanes sometimes almost 10 boards and I would still get a strike.  All I got to say is WOW!!!  I have never been a fan of Hammer products before.  I have always been a faithful user of the Track balls, but with this Black Widow I must say it has got my attention and I am looking forward to maybe trying the No Mercy.

I have been throwing the WIDOW for about one month now and all I have to say is WOW..Too bad I did't get this ball early in my league season..I am a 226 average bowler..I bowl in three leagues and the last two weeks I shot 235/279/289..245/237/280 on Tuesday night league..279/300/229..219/235/269 on Thursday Night..269/229/235..300/269/245..on Friday Night League..The widow is an awesome ball.I can't believe the reaction this ball has on the lanes..You can either throw it down and in, or hook it a little..Get this ball..You won't be disappointed..

Got this ball for Christmas. Drilled with a 4 1/2 pin to PAP. Pin way up above my ring finger, being 2 inches from my VAL. MB next to my thumb, mild strength MB for me. No hole. Hit it with Ebonite's factory polish. Mostly a tournament ball. Used when the lanes get tight down lane because it still can get there. Gets ok midlane read and a very strong sweeping arc type of motion to the pocket. Have used on a number of lane conditions with success.

I will start out by saying that I like the Radical Inferno much more...and this isn't my favorite ball.

I drilled this ball to have a strong, smooth arc...and a strong smooth arc it has. This ball is overall one of the most violent balls I have ever seen.

With that said, my first full series with this ball was a 701, and my fourth game was a 277.

This ball doesn't like dry lanes, or hitting up on it or missing it at the bottom. Stay consistent with your rev rate, and this ball will serve you well. Once you are lined in, the ball digs a trench to the hole. What a beast.

I would reccommend this ball to anyone. Anyone. Period. Just don't hit it, don't miss it, and this ball will carry.

I got this ball drilled skid/flip layout 1 (length with sharp breakpoint and aggressive backend.
I'm a high track player so the pin is above my ring finger, my ball speed is 15-17mph and 45 degrees axis rotation.
I normally play standing on board 23 and going over first arrow.

This black widow ball is unreal!!!
I thought my ebonite total nv was so good i got the black widow punched up with the same layout (see above)
I wanted a ball that would handle carry down better than the TNV and that was stronger at the breakpoint.
The black widow gave me more than i would of dreamed of, i mean this ball is awesome.
Even when i don't get the revs on the ball this ball sill seems to find some hooking power.
I would like to know if hammer have fitted this ball with nitrous oxide because when you release this ball with rev's it goes long and then it drives like a freight train towards the pocket with so much carry you can almost turn your back on the ball and just listen to the pins crumble.
I thought I would never get a better ball than my TNV but this ball is the best most consistent ball i have ever rolled...

Drilling-Pin above ring (5") mb about 1 1/2" right of thumb (4")-5x4

THS-Wow! Sums this ball up in one word. On fresh THS, I'm able to stand quite deep and swing the Black Widow out as far as 7-10 at the breakpoint, and it never even hesitates to come back. Huge pop on the backend. Hits extremely hard, and carries well. When the heads start burning up, it's time to switch to something else, as the BW starts up a little early, still maintains backend though. Overall I really love this ball, can't find a condition that I can't use it on.

Ball specs:
15 lb.
3" Pin
2 oz. TW

Drill specs:
4 x 3 (pin under ring finger)
MB 75º
Weight hole on VAL 2 1/4" down

First ball I've bought somewhat new in a while....I should keep up with the new stuff.

Was looking for something that would cut through the carrydown I've been experiencing after the first games.  Currently throwing a Flash Force as a starter, but it starts to wiggle in the second game.

This is a lotta ball.

Thrown it in 3 different situations, here are the results.

#1)  Straight off the press.  OOB, Fresh 36' THS
Too much for this condition.  Actually got through the fronts a lot better than I thought it would, but just too much down lane.  At around 40' or so just made a violent move.  I completely took my hand out of it, throw it 20 to 5, and get it back.  Problem is, it was consistent because of the lack of revs.

#2)  Surface taken to 1500, shiny, Fresh THS
Shiny is better here.  Still really strong in the back, though.  Amazed at how this solid just glides through the heads.  Really picks up in the mids, you can actually watch the ball rev up (fun).  Still couldn't really lean on it, which caused it to be a bit squirty.  Much better performance, though.  Hits like a friggin' train loaded with tanks.

#3) Shiny.  Broken down THS, w/carrydown
Here was when I really saw the Black Widow shine.  Cleared the heads with ease, but cut through carrydown like butter.  On a condition where my Flash Force would start up and just quit, the Black Widow just kept on coming.  This ball is a true machine in the backends.

Overall:  With different drillings, I think you could match this ball up for just about anything except dead dry.  OOB, this would match up with any oiler.  I could see the Black Widow being flat scary on longer patterns.  For league bowlers, you're going to have to shine it up, just too much ball.  The bigger handed guys can go deep and bring it back from China.

This is my first venture into the world of Hammer. I have been curious about this ball for more than a year and decided to try it out after a lot of thought. The Black Widow clears the heads quite nicely, has a strong mid-lane, and a strong move on the back. The backend is quite strong yet controllable, something that I love seeing out of my solid reactives. The pin carry is good as with all Hammer balls that I have seen recently. I feel that the Widow is one of the most versatile balls that I have thrown in a long while. I have been able to get on the side and play in, or play up the back and pipe the direct line. You can do anything with this ball and you can be successful. A great offering from Hammer. I am also thinking about drilling a Black Widow Pearl and I will review that once I do.

Drilled used righty ball rev leverage for me lefty.  Specs were so so final specs also so so.  Reaction was over/under so I took off the shine and went with 4000 Abralon.  Reaction is better and hit is good on some shots supercrazynutjob hit on others.

Some balls go everywhere with you, its your goto ball, its your ol' faithful ball, its the kind of stuff that is always in the back of your mind.  No matter the shot, it could be 50 feet of granite or 60 feet of pure petroleum, the Black Widow will be creeping around in the ol' noggin.

Well it's my second Hammer product. The first one was the old black hammer.
I purchased 14 lbs BW when they have a demo day in my town. It was a year ago, and that time I didn't have any idea how to layout a ball nor the effect its given. Now I know better...

I think they drilled mine leverage layout or close to it. Pin to PAP was less then 4 inch and below bridge.
In 33 feet christmas tree wood lane I play this layout make the ball loose the energy too early. On brunswick synthetic it didn't like short oil or dry lane as well. It took time for me to adjust to it, but my conclusion is; Leverage layout BW wasn't for me as it becomes very condition specific.

After around 6 months I decided to re-plug it. This time I did the layout my self. Pin to PAP is 4 3/8 inch MB to PAP around 4 1/16 with pin above bridge. Now this where the BW shine for me. It can handle the 33 feet woodlane (have to stay in the oil tho) and can be played on medium synthetic lane but again definetly not dry one. BW is not for everyone, its sensitive to hand position and release. Its giving me a hard time at first, but from BW I have learned the proper release and hand position.

It require great care, if you don't clean it properly it will tell you right out. The coverstock is mild, I have lots of mark on it, but perhaps because the house I played wasnt properly maintained. I resurfaced it once after good hot water bath followed by Ebonite factory finish, the reaction came back beautifully.

I have sold my BW because I used 15 lbs equipment now, but I look forward to get BW Pearl and/or Beat'n.

In conclusion; This ball is a great ball!! pin action is what it does best. The shape is angular then snap when its going to hit the pin. Again this ball is hand position sensitive, so if you are not consistent on this department you might want to think twice to get this baby. But if you want to practice it then BW will be your great teacher. Go Hammer!!

I just bought the Black Widow about 2 months ago after reading a lot of reviews on it. I had not bowled in over 10 years till about 3 months ago I think this ball is really great I watched my average go from the 130's to the 170's. it hooks in to the pocket just how I want it to then destroys the pins. I have set up my video camera on a small tripod next to the ball return and when I play it back you can really see the pins mix. I think Hammer did a good job with this ball.

I drilled mine to hook early and to be continuos. I read a lot of reviews about how this ball can be over and under so I was reluctant to drill it to go long and snap.  I was surprised at how strong the cover is OOB.  I ended up using Abralon 600 and then Extender polish.  This ball is angular but very controllable.  It doesn't jump or over react - just a smooth rolling ball that hits hard and carries well.  I wouldn't mind having a 2nd Widow and leaving the OOB surface.  All in all this is a very good ball and I would say it's a winner.

Specs: 270-300 rpm, 18-19 mph, powerstroker.

This ball responds great to cover adjustments, just telling that right off the bat, I've tried this ball at 4000, 4000 polished, 2000, 1000, 5000 (roughly), 320, 500, and 1000 polished.

I have mine drill like this..

o op....xhole
...cg
O.MB

I like this ball the most at 2000 sanded. I play 15-5 with this ball, the thing that I really dont like out of the widow is the fact I do not see a strong midlane roll, it is strictly skid snap.

This ball has excellent hitting power, but its biggest flaw is that you can throw it through the breakpoint easy. Also this ball is very snappy. I would reccomend a BWP if you dont have a BW already, the BWP is smoother.
