I just came back to bowling after a 20 year lay-off and have been bowling for about 2 months now.  I purchased a Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic when I first got back and have been doing ok with it, but nothing special.  It's me, not the ball.  Still trying to get the rust out.  The RG is a great ball, but I have really been inconsistant with it and have been wanting to try another ball.  I have been looking around and reading reviews on quite a few balls and was narrowing it down to a Brunswick Radical Inferno or a Raw Hammer Toxic.  I found a great deal on the Toxic at AllStarBowling.com and got one for a fraction of what I would pay here locally.  The guy at a pro shop wanted to charge me $249.99 to bring one in, not including drilling a inserts!  Rip-off!  Well the Toxic came in today and I took it down to another pro shop to get it drilled.  I had a little time so I went to the bowling alley close by and tried it out.
First throw, strike!  Second throw, strike, then a whole bunch of spares and a couple more strikes and ended up with a 210.  That's pretty good for me!  I'm still inconsistant with my aim, but the Toxic is more forgiving then the SD-73.  With the 73, if i miss my mark a couple of boards left, away it goes, beyond brooklyn.  With the toxic, even though I miss, it still hits pretty close to the pocket.  Does not have the hook of the Classic for me, since I am a stroker with not too much revs, but I really like the Toxic.  It goes straight and comes back just enough, plus it looks just so cool going down the lane!

Well, I guess I've had this ball long enuff to post a review. A very interesting ball. The jury is defintely still out on this ball. It's always feast or famine. I either bowl great with it or absolutely terrrible!
Anyways, the ball is:

15#er- no weight hole
Ball has a 3.5" pin

Surface:OOB, except I hit it with a grey pad to take some of the shine off it and give me a little more control.

drilled: pin over the ring with the cg in the palm (see my profile)Kind of a
4-7/8 x 5 drilling--in between a regular leverage drill and a stacked flip drilling

Lanes: synthetic, with a very lite oil condition, which tracks up extremely fast, but a slightly higher concentration in the middle.
I tended to play, 13 at the arrows, to about 10 at the breakpoint. A slurve. If I make it thru the second game, I'm 18 at the arrows, 10 at the breakpoint with an increase in speed.

So far, I have never shot down and in with this ball. It is, much like the Doom, skid-snappish. Since I have a weak, backendy drill on this ball, it tends to be rather condition specific. The bad part about this ball is I can always use it on the fresh shot. It really shines on the fresh, but there is a severe dropoff after that. I usually have to put it away after the second game, if I make it thru the second game. The ball has really paid for itself on fresh shots! After that, I lose a lot of confidence in it, in consistency and in being able to just pick up spares routinely.

The Doom on the other hand was strong if you drilled it strong, and weak but playable, if you drilled it weak. The Doom was much more versatile, and consistent, and I could play all over the lanes with it. Down and in, up the boards, inside, or even down the middle.

I love the bright green color of this ball, but honestly, not everybody can use this ball. I know this may sound crazy, but what I see on the backend when I throw this......is a ball, with the initial skid-snap move of the Doom, but the final movement like a Black Widow. Now if this were a solid, or a particle pearl, that would be a great combination. But because this is a pearl, it makes the ball very over/under and "iffy" at times. Just my take.

Oh, and I have posted some extremely high scores with this ball, and won a few pots as well. However...

The jury is still out....

Used my Toxic for the first time last night. Drilled pin above fingers, cg in palm no weight hole. I bowl on synthetics, typical house shot with one difference oiled to 42 feet and a little more oil in middle. Played 20 at arrows out to 8 at break. This ball goes long, hits dry, TURNS LEFT and doesn't stop. Carry for me was very good. Only thing about this ball if you get into dry too early just pray that it hits the head pin, because the hook on this ball like a lot of people have said is more than expected. Overall a very good ball especially for the price.

Have had my Toxic for about a month now.

Drilled Pin under ring right in line with cg about 2 inches under.

Bowled on a few different conditions. Lane #1 is pretty wet and Lane #2 is more on the medium-dry side.

Used this ball OOB and had some pretty good success with it right away. Ball has a VERY sharp backend, and it can be very snappy if not used on the right conditions. I left more splits with this ball then I have ever left with any other ball. This only holds true when trying to use this ball on carrydown. If I were you I would not try it, because it could get ugly. It just gets so jumpy and unpredictable off of the dry that it is best to just put it away.

Now for the good part. On fresh conditions this ball will give you a really clean but very strong look. It is forgiving if you miss outside, but I wouldnt reccommend pulling it, because it can be unforgiving. The backend isnt booming, but it is very sharp and angular, and it happens all of a sudden. Sometimes I didnt think it was going to hook and it just suprised the hell out of me how hard it snapped back. As for medium lane conditions, or even a little medium heavy on a fresh shot, this can be a great ball. If your looking for something more versatile, I would suggest possibly going with the Doom. All of this is also based off of me throwing from the left side, so all of these condtions increase on the right by far. I recently have taken it down to 2000 polished to try to combat the carrydown a little, but have not experimented much.

I did win the San Diego City Tournament with this ball though. It was a medium house shot, and being on the left side, this ball just ate it up.

OK

I have had this ball trying to figure out how I want to drill it and finally made the decision to drill

Had my pro-shop drill it for length with a more angular break point.  I play generally on lanes that are medium to light and felt this would give me the most length and success compared to my current arsenal.

Pin about 1" right of ring finger about 3.75" from PAP (which I thought was kinda tight but I was wrong)

My current arsenal allows me to play up and in or strong arcs to the pocket...This drilling gives me a different look into the pocket as I found out.

I played 2 games immediately after drilled and was quite impressed with the results..

I threw my first ball standing right foot on center arrow, throwing from 15 out to 8 and it came back on Brooklyn side....gave me a basic line..

Moved out to 30 on right foot, threw across 3rd arrow out to about the 6 or 7 board to a break point approximately 15 feet from pin deck....Ball came back hard and late....Ball slid through heads clean and kept line through midlane.  As it got into the dry, read quick and hard....

I was really impressed with the reaction through the pins and how the ball read the lanes.  At the time, I was bowling on a 40' house shot (dry from 5 out)

I shot a 189 194 pair, which isn't bad since I am about a 170 ave bowler right now...

Here is my review of the Hammer Toxic.

Layout - Pin 4 3/4 from PAP, with CG kicked right. Weight hole was also used.
Layout Pic - http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/TheOne9110/100_0656.jpg

Stats are as follows:
PAP - 5 1/4 OVER, 1/8 DOWN
Speed - About 15mph or somewhat lower
Revs - Lower-Medium, can go on a higher Medium rev rate if necessary.

Reaction Wanted: A good amount of length, with a sharp flip on the backend. Also with a strong hit since it would be flipping so hard.
Reaction Received: The length i wanted (about 40 feet till it sets up), but it's very oil sensitive, which causes the loss on the backend flip. Sometimes so oil sensitive that it loses almost all its hitting power leaving weak pocket 5's, pocket 8-10's, etc. If used on a LIGHTER pattern, the ball is amazing. It gives the strongest hit, and carries excellent! This ball, for me, is by no means a Medium oil ball.
Overall: This ball is a keeper and is still, since the day i got it, the only ball i use in league. I'm very happy with it. My only problem, like stated above, is its oil sensitivity. Maybe a 4000 grit surface will help? But anyway, this ball really comes through whenever i need it to. I can't play very deep angles with it. I was able to the first day i got it, but not anymore. I usually have a line like this. Feet standing on 20, shoot for 10, breakpoint around 7-8. That is NOT my comfortable line, but hey, it works for me right now. I wouldn't mind another Toxic, and would highly recommend it for LIGHT oil lanes. A very light medium at the most IMO.

I hope this review helped in some way/shape/or form. If there's any additional questions on something i missed, or something you would like to know, then LMK! Thanks for reading

This will not be a technical review as I picked up this ball used for 35 bucks and can only say that it is drilled with the pin above the ring finger and the cg kicked out slightly.

I cleaned and resurfaced the ball on my spinner, taking it down to 180 grit and then back up to 4000 abralon. I then put an extra shine on the ball with bean's polish.  The ball was as slick as glass. I was trying to put the cover in a condition where the ball would go long, so that I could play the ball after the lanes got too dry for my mean machine.

I have bowled two league nights with the ball and the results have been much better than I expected. The first night (on wood), after struggling the first game with my mean machine and bowling 167, (the lanes had light oil and it is hard for me to put the mean machine down)I picked up the Toxic, affectionately called kermit by the guys at the lane, and proceeded to bowl a 197 and 223. The ball easily made it through the heads, and did not overreact when it hit the dry.

The second night(brunswick synthetics), I started with the Toxic because the shot was light oil, and bowled 196, 204 and 214. I had 5 in a row in the last game, opened the 9th frame and threw a split in the tenth and still ended up with a 214.

For my style, this ball is the answer. It hits hard, is easy to control, keeps the pins low and has great carry.

I have already ordered a new Toxic just in case this one breaks or dies, which does not seem likely since it had great use on it when I bought it.

If you are looking for a good ball at a good price, give this ball some consideration.

Hammer RAW HAMMER TOXIC
Weight: 15#
Pin Placement: 2-3"
Top Weight: 3 oz.

Layout:
4 1/4" Pin Below the Ring Finger. CG kicked out 1-2". Weight Hole 5" over from mid-line.

Picture: http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6669273

First Impressions:
Back in February, I drilled up a Toxic with the same layout as described on my DOOM review. The TOXIC with that layout was very squirty for me and not a whole lot of "AWE" when it came down to reaction. Now, 7 months later, I decided that I would punch another one up and give it another try, this time with a different layout. I went with the same layout as my ANGER. This time, the ball gave me a different reaction and a better look.

General Thoughts:
With the Pearl additive, I definitely saw quite a bit of length but the backend reaction was phenomenal compared to the first TOXIC I drilled back in Feb. I played mostly straighter angles with this ball as the house I usually bowl at has widen the outside up and put a bit more oil in the middle.

Comparison/Contrast:

TOXIC vs. DOOM

I feel the DOOM is a more consistent piece than the TOXIC was. The TOXIC with its pearl additive gave me alot more length than what I really need vs. the DOOM which just reads the heads better for me and gives me a consistent reaction.

TOXIC vs. ANGER

The ANGER gets into its roll earlier than the TOXIC while the TOXIC gives more length, obviously. The TOXIC is however alot cleaner and smoother through the heads whereas the ANGER can handle the oil a tad bit better. A very good 1-2 combo in any arsenal.

Conclusion:
I really like how the DOOM is compared to all three, but the TOXIC serves its purpose. I feel it is overall more stronger than the DOOM and is less aggressive than the ANGER. You could definitely drill these 3 and have a really good 3 ball arsenal. The pricepoint is definitely a steal in my eyes!

Hammer Toxic
Weight 15#
Layout: strong layout

I really like this ball last year, but let the price keep me away from it.  At first I couldn't get the ball to do what I wanted it to do and threw many gutters.  I even wanted to sell the ball.  Now that I have given it time this ball works great.  This ball goes long down the lane and then hooks into the pocket.  Some times I throw the ball on the wrong arrow or don't follow through, the ball still went Brooklyn.  this ball can even be thrown out to the gutter and still hit the pocket.  I haven't had any really high scores yet but my league scores are getting better.

The only bad thing I have to say about this ball is that when the ball came back through the ball return it got nicked twice in almost the same spot.  this makes me really mad because I have only had my ball for a month.  I have never had that happen to any of my other balls at this alley.

Nothing hits like a hammer.

I was really sad to hear that Hammer had decided to discontinue this ball. What a great ball for the money. It isnt a heavy oil monster, but if you are looking for a ball to use on a medium condition that gives a nice reaction with a sweet little flip on the backend, this is the ball for you. I recommend going out and getting one while the local pro shop still has them.

I have had this ball for quite some time.  I find it to work really well in the first game and then it seems to have a problem getting to the pocket in the second game so I usually put it back in the bag.  A bowling bud of mine says that he did some research on this ball and found out that this ball rolls well for the first game but since the coverstock is not one that really sucks up oil that it won't finish well in the second.  But if you put it up for the second game and then use it for the third that you will get the reaction you had in the first game.  Has anybody tried this with this ball?  Comments?

the first 2 weeks after i bought this ball i loved it. it would get up so nice, and head to the pocket no matter where i threw it. but after about 3 weeks or so, the ball died down, i was throwing it by standing at 40 and throwing over 18-20 and getting it out to about 4 and demolish the pocket from there. but after three weeks i could only stand at 25 and throw over 10 to the 5. but it still is consistant for my style which is a med to high rev rate. i can still push it out, or pull it in and get to the pocket.

over all, its my best ball, and it upped my adverage from 195 to 205

This ball is my main "Strike Producer" in our Monday Night League at Poelking Lanes South, Dayton, Ohio. I have found it to be very stable over most lane conditions. This ball can handle fresh oil laid down just ahead of our League
starting! (After 1 1/2 years, I have found only 1 night when the oil could not be overcome by this ball. THAT night I had to resort to my Plastic "MAXIM"
10-Pin ball to score!)

Extra Note: My Raw HAMMER TOXIC is drilled with a left-hand offset and  is
used stictly for 1st.-ball strike attempts, and 2nd-ball pins left
on the left-half of the alley. I quickly discovered 10 pins are
virtually impossible to pick up! (For 2nd-ball pins on the right
half of the alley, I use a Plastic "MAXIM".)
