This is my first new ball since '85. This was due to having to leave the game for 25+ yrs. When I started back in July '10 after the layoff, my 27 yr old Black Hammer although good for the extreme outside down & in shot was just not finishing on the new conditions at any other angle. Even the AMF Gold Angle also from the early '80s and roughed up with green SB would not finish from inside 7 bd.
So time for something new.
Even though I was running a shop in SandyEggo when I had to leave, I had not really kept up with the changes in equipment, conditions, oils, patterns etc. It's a whole new game.
So based on the recommendation of a new bowling buddy, I went to see one of the local shops to get fitted and recommended for something new.
After watching me with the Hammer, knowing what conditions I was going to be bowling on and what I wanted to be able to do, he recommended the Venom. We went with 15# as my Black Hammer was 15-9 and knowing that the newer balls finish stronger we can reduce the weight and gain some control. (Back in the day I normally would stay between 15/15-8 for the gain in control.)
So he drilled it up with pin just above ring finger, HMB and CG to the right of the thumb.
I found the best place to use this at least for me is 12-13 bd. This actually gives me an area of about 4-6 bds to the right of there as the oil pattern seems to start at 9 so I can miss as far as the 7-8 bd and still finish in the pocket. Inside of 13 it is going brooklyn or worse if the shoulder was down.
My first time out with this I was trying to play 7-8 bd and coming in behind the head pin. After a couple of low deuces, I moved in to 12 and save for a pocket 8, pocket 7 and ringing 10 would have shot high 250.
A surgery issue on middle finger has kept me from coming back as fast as I would like, but practice sessions are back up in the 195+ range.
My black Hammer has now become my spare ball. Learning to let the ball do the work is new for this old school down & in shooter, but even this old dog has learned a few new tricks.
