Sharp Blade
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: Not Available
Description:

Sharp Blade consists of Hammer’s Classic Core, the same core used in the Sling Blade, and Power Grip Particle veneer, the very same veneer on the Vicious Particle. This combination allows the Sharp Blade to read and react to friction on the lane sooner than previous Blade balls, making it an ideal selection on medium to heavy oil patterns. Bowlers looking for big back-ending motion at an attractive price point need look no further than Sharp Blade.

Navy Blue/Green in color, Sharp Blade is now available through pro shops and distributors worldwide in 10 - 16 pounds.

The Sharp Blade was drilled up for length configuration and delivered solid skid/flip performance on long - 52, medium -48, and short -36 oil patterns. The Sharp Blade went longer on heavy oil but snapped back sharply and predictably into the pocket, clearing the deck. Even adjusting foot placements and ball speeds on heavy oil, I found it easy to find the shot to strike at will. And the sound it makes as it hits lets a blind man know all went down...hard! The Sharp Blade made it easy to adjust on medium lane conditions with minimal efforts and cut through the pins with little to no deflection. The Sharp Blade does not look as colorful as the other new balls while rolling down the lane but hits every bit as hard...REAL hard! Why? Nothing Hits as Hard as a Hammer!

The addition of the Sharp Blade into the Blade series was a breath of fresh air to me. I had been looking for a ball to fit between my Sling Blade and Blade Particle. I think I found it. This ball needed to handle wet/dry and also heavy oil but be effective enough on longer house patterns. Here are the specs.

Axis = 5 1/4 +1/4 up

Before I dilled this ball I automatically took this ball from Factory "1000" up to 2000 then 4000 w/ the Abralon Pads. Then layed out the ball 4x4 1/2 (Pin was 2 1/2). Pin/CG stacked under ring finger. Drilled it up and threw it in practice on our Vegas League here. Threw 5 balls in practice and left a few 4-9's and a 2-10. SO i went to the shop and threw a sheen on the ball. Threw 4 more shots and same thing. So i polished the cover up.

This ball is true to its Name. The Sharp Blade cleared the front very well while holding its energy through the breakpoint. Its transition off the back of the pattern was very predictable and hit like its predecessors. In our tougher scratch league this ball went a little to far due to the polish. But I was able to square up more and it seemed to hold its energy a little bit more and explode off the back of the pattern. Sometimes it had recovery problems left/right but out of the box would do the job at 4000 w/o polish.

To compare the Sling blade to the Sharp Blade would be sumed up in 3 words. 10 boards difference. Sling blade..True Skid-Flip...Sharp Blade.. Smooth Transition with the skid in all the right places.

A++ To hammer on this ball! For a particle ball it sure does clean the fronts with ease! Cant wait for the next addition to the Blade series.

Overall the ball is great. I use on heavy oil only because the ball goes very long with a lot of backend. I throw topspin and I can control the ball very well.   Pin placement   00o

Very good ball as says the manufacturer his reaction is like a knife, stays long and close strong, my first game was a disaster, only 109 and my average is 180, I had 6 consecutive splits of all flavors.
I only did a small adjustment to the left and change my mark from 10 to 15 wood toward the 5, and goodbye nightmare, I had 204,235,215 games, yesterday I had 216,198,205,222, thats very good for me. Also it did not matter if entered short or mounted to 1 the results was strike or spares of 1 or 2 pins.

I´m a high RPM and speed player
Lanes : synthetic both
Lane condition : oily 43 feet and 40
Drill : High RG-Lenght Layout Pin 5" - 5-1/2" from PAP

It´s true... "Nothing hits like Hammer"

I picked this ball up to smooth out a wet dry condition. Cg on Pap with a 2.5 inch pin. It's a 14 pound ball and there's a huge weight hole on pap to make the statics legal. I polished up the ball as I don't see enough oil to need a dull particle ball.
The ball gets average length and then arcs nicely into the pocket. The ball carries well with clean backends but doesn't like to move inside when the oil starts to dry up. This is probably due to the drill pattern.
I like this ball when there is a lot of oil up front and the backends are moving. I can play a little straighter than I can with an aggressively drilled ball and still generate hit and carry.
It's a one trick pony due to the drilling, but it's a nice core/cover match up that will hook some on the wetter mediums and carry the ten pin.
Update:
I dulled this ball with a grey scotchbrite pad, and now I save it for the very rarely seen heavy oil shot.

Axis: 3 1/2, 1/4 down
Med revs, low-med ball speed

This ball is a remarkable piece of work.  The ball stays clean on any oil, dry or flooded. When the ball reaches the backend, it executes the turn like a pocket seeking missle and explodes the pins on contact. Hit high or low it doesnt matter, you are getting a strike.

I've used this ball on both wood and synthetic. It likes wood but LOVES synthetic. Stand 28 throw over 15 for wood but the synthetic allow me to actually roll it and play a more comfortable down and in shot.

All in all the Sharp Blade is the second best ball I've ever thrown, right behind the Vicious Strike.  Just one more reason to say, "Nothing hits like a hammer"

I drilled this ball with the pin/cg 2" from my pap. The pin/cg were 0" from each other. Out of the box, the ball would read the lane earlier than I want. So the surface was hit to 2000 averlon. The ball scooted down the lane easier, and retain it's energy. The ball hit like a ton. I was able to play over the left gutter cap, looking left of the 6th arrow.

Got my Sharp blade about a month ago.  Ball is 15lbs with a 4" pin.  pin is about an inch above the bridge and the cg is just above and to the right of the thumbhole, no xtra hole needed.  Kept ball in box condition and hit the lanes.  The pattern was a typical house shot on synthetics.  I am a high rev medium speed bowler.  Lined up on my normal shot which is  rolling it on 20 and let it swing out to about 5 and this ball rolled up and hit the pocket like it was pissed off at it.  Shot 3 games on that line and only had to move my feet a total of 3 boards.  The games were all above 210.  after the third game the oil broke down too much so I moved right to try an outside line.  Released it on 12, and it swung to 8.  The ball held up very nice and made a nice smooth turn off the back to rip the deck.  Had to keep up my speed on this line or else I was going brooklyn or through the nose.  Overall I would give this ball a 9 seeing as this ball needs oil to work and I have found myself putting it away midway through the 2nd game and getting my blade pearl reactive to finish the job.  Otherwise an awesome ball by Hammer.

This ball has been out for a little while, and is very impressive, specially at the price point.  ($109.95 undrilled in my shop).

We hosted a Hammer Demo Day in May 2004, and as I am on Storm Staff, haven't thrown much non Storm ball in about 3 years.  I really liked this ball.  For me this ball hooked the most of all the Hammer products.  I didn't get to try the Turbo Diesel, couldn't stop throwing this ball.

You definitely need some oil for this bad boy.  Love the box surface, gets through the arrows very well on fresh pattern.  Revs up at this point, and doesn't jump when it comes off the oil pattern.  Makes a hard arc all the way through the pin deck, hits very hard.

What I also liked was the recovery.  As the lanes got more and more broken down and choppy, this ball would still turn the corner pretty well from 4th arrow on the Typical House Shot.  Once I got in to 5th arrow, the ball struggle to get the 10 out, as it was burning up too soon.  A little polish probably would have solved that problem, but defeats the original purpose of this ball.

I don't see anyone not being able to use this ball.  The big hook guys probably won't use it much, unless you see alot of oil.  Tweeners might want a little less ball for fresh house shots, but your mileage may vary, should get some use here.  I really think Ladies and straighter players will love this ball, specially on slicker house shots.  Seems to read the lane at the right point, which is in the middle third.  Gives good control, but without using energy too fast, or having to force the ball through the front part of the lane.

Hammer has a winner here, good performance for the dollar!!!

Im posting reviewws of everything i have or had now, cuz im lazy and got nothing to do so here we go. This was my first hammer bowling ball. It is drilled pin next to ring, with the cg kicked out about 1 inch from the end of my palm. I clean and dull it regullary, and have had it for like 160 games, which is a lot for particle since they say 60 games max. I usually play up second arrow with this ball, and i usually dont go any deeper becasue theres no flip block, and it just dosnt amke the good move to the pocket like, for instance, my saw blade would. This is probobly my favorite mid line hammer ball, but i dont use it on heavy oil, since i never get any. All medium for me. I would recomend this ball for people with not high ball speeds and for medium-heavy oil, and it will work wonders. If you want something that will flip more though in oil, get a saw blade and dull it to like 400 grit or something. All in all, sharp blade = good buy.

Last week I made my first 300 game with this ball, my averange is 195, it had kept this ball, but the conditions of the oil they obliged me to use it again, and, what a surprise!!, shoot the ball by the 20 toward the 5 and in the 40 feet approximately I exploit to the pines time and again. The ball works almost by if alone, without no effort of my shoulder or wrist.

it is discontinued, I know, but it does´t matter has returned to my bag.

The ball already is very struck, someone would be able to tell me if there is some ball of hammer similar to the Sharp Blade?

HAPPY BOWLING EVERYONE!!!

I bought this ball about 2 months ago after not bowling for about 17 years.  I was never a very good bowler averaging about 150 from what I remember and just gave the sport up as I never seemed to get any better.  A friend had someone drop out of their league and asked me to pick up the spot.  He told me about the new technology in balls and recommended Hammer.  So I went out and bought a sharp blade as a middle priced and performance ball....man was I surprised.  This thing has been unbelievable.  Last week I shot a 674...way beyond what I was previously capable of shooting.  This ball hits like a ton and carries even if it doesn't hit the pocket.  I had one game with 10 strikes.  I'm really glad to have come back as this new ball makes the game a whole lot more fun!
