Toxic Raw Hammer: Mini Review & Pictures *Update 12/12*
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:50:14 PM »
Hey BR & Hammer Family,

Well, I finally got around to throwing my Hammer Toxic. Just barely made it to league tonight as I was driving home from a training class for work about 100 miles away!

Anyways, here are pics of the Toxic:

Mini-Review

House: AMF Synthetics
Pattern: Medium-Oiled Crown Shot (Drier boards outside, slicker in the middle)
Backends: Semi-Clean with slight carrydown

Didn't know what to expect from a Label Leverage type layout since I haven't thrown a ball with that layout for years. Very clean through the heads and clears them nicely. We decided on kicking the cg towards the center of grip since it had high top weight. Ball didn't need a hole, but might punch one up to tweak reaction. (Although I like how it reacts now!)

This ball is very predictable and has medium-long length with a continuous strong arc. Mixes up the pins very well. Although, I did leave about 2 solid 10-pins and a few light 10's. I also left a 4-9 split to end the night hehe. Boo!
Overall, great carry!

I really like the motion of this ball. It's one of those balls that is predictable and you know what is going to happen in the last 15 feet. Granted we were bowling on a crown House Pattern, but this ball didn't snap off the backend like my Paradigm or Rampage. It is a bit tamer on the backend, but that's ok too! Oh one more thing, I got about 5 inches of flare, I was surprised!

Compared to a Black Widow my teammate was using on the pair, I would say this ball is obviously cleaner through the fronts, but not as strong in the mids like the Widow. It would be safe to say that if I wanted to compliment this Toxic with a ball that handles more oil, I wouldn't hesitate to try a Black Widow as well.

Night ended up like this: 216-225-243=684 (Eh, not bad after shooting 560+ last week haha)

Hope this helps and if you have any questions let me know!
Great Job Hammer & Looking forward to trying out more of your gear.
Regards,
Ram

P.S. Video coming soon!

Awesome, the ball really looks great in real life too, I see.

Teee--

I would NOT recommend the No Mercy for a newer bowler.  If you go from the Scout to a No Mercy, you might end up scratching your head wondering what you just spent 200+ on.  If you want a step up from the Scout, you have a few better choices in the Hammer line.  I don't know enough about the Toxic to recommend it, but I can highly recommend either the Doom or the Pain.  Both are GREAT hitting balls with a combination of power and, more importantly, control.  The Doom is polished and will get more length and a stronger, more angular move.  The Pain is a solid reactive and with a great midlane move and a strong, but controllable arc for a finish.  Personally, I almost never put my Pain away.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bell Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

HI Tee...I would agree with what splendorex recommended. You might want to go with a Solid Reactive like the pain. Have your ball driller lay it out so that the ball with a conservative layout so that you know what to expect out of it. Nothing too fancy. You are taking a step in the right direction with the Scout Reactive. Just keep practicing and when you think you can move up to the next level equipment-wise, I say go for a stronger ball (but not too strong!).

Splendor...Toxic seems like a nice ball on the fresh. I like it so far. Will have to try it on other surfaces on shots though then make a better assessment.

Thanks guys!

I use a DOOM and I love it. But I would recommend the PAIN more than the DOOM or TOXIC for the more beginner bowler.

Hey everyone I have an update on the Hammer Toxic.

Last night I threw the ball on AMF synthetics. Oil condition was Medium and oiled 40-42 feet with dirty backends (they weren't cleaned or stripped, just leftover from morning and afternoon play).

Ideal line to the pocket
I was able to play a comfortable line projecting the ball around 7 at the arrows to about 3 at the breakpoint. Ball was very clean through the front, revved up nicely in the mids and made a continuous arc to the pocket. I could also move left and start the ball around 12 at the arrows with the same breakpoint and still find the pocket comfortably.

Carry & Hit
On thing I noticed is that the ball is very continuous. For a mid-priced ball, the hit is very strong. I am impressed with it. It really mixes up the pins well. The continuation through the pocket is impressive on flush hits.

Comparison to other balls in my arsenal

X-Factor Vertigo
Pin just right and over ring finger with MB 2 inches right of thumb
1000 Grit W/Ebonite Factory Polish

If you can believe it, the Toxic is actually stronger in the mids and in the backend than the Asymmetrical Vertigo. Before they oiled the lanes, I was able to use the Vertigo on the same line I was using the Toxic after they oiled it. Before they oiled the lanes, I was playing deep with the Toxic from around 20-25 at the arrows and 7 at the breakpoint. I have a feeling the coverstock prep for the Vertigo tamed it down a bit or the Toxic is that darn strong!

Epic Battle
Pin right of ring with MB 2 inches right of thumb
800 Grit Scotchbrite

I saw a noticable difference between the Toxic and the Light Load Particle Battle. The Battle was way stronger in the mids and the backend reaction was more of a "hook-set." Playing the same line as the Toxic, I went high and left the 3-6-10 combo a couple of times. A couple of moves left and I was back into the pocket. This ball has a totally different motion and it rolls very heavy. Def a good ball to pull out when the patterns are wetter.

Well, I hope this update was helpful. I must say that so far I am impressed with the ball. Who would've thought a label type layout would work out so well (so far). Video coming soon as always and if you have any questions, let me know!

Best Regards,
Ram
