Author Topic: Help! Got the Whup'n --- CG issue? (Read 6473 times)

Got the Whup'n today... and hopefully, I am not getting a screw'n too from BowlingBall.com.

Here's why: I specifically requested a ball with the pin, CG, and HART all in line. What arrived was a ball with the CG located exactly 3 inches right of the line from pin to HART.

So: do I return it? Do I drill it? Looks like a blem to me. Kinda pissed right now, as I paid top $ for this ball.

That is what I am afraid of.. If I get one I want one with the cg kicked right so I can get the HART deep in the track and have the cg on center grip..
the whup'n in the buddies video as them all in a line..

I have the NM, NMB and NMW drilled the same (#6, pin over bridge 5"from my PAP and the HART an inch left of my thumb).

The NM is earlier than the Beat'n and the Whup'n of course. The Whup'n is slightly a hair longer and stronger than the Beat'n, but you could only see it if you taped it or had someone watch for you. It is hard to tell yourself if you are throwing it. That being said, the Whup'n just has that extra something that I like over the Beat'n. I think it has more game longevity and use than the Beat'n would, in regards to the coverstock.

I have yet to use either on carrydown, as I haven't encountered that condition yet. But my NM and it's drill was always better suited for carrydown over the NMB.

so you think the beatn is a bit stronger than the beat'n .. guy from buddiesproshop emailed me and said the whup'n is longer and about 5 boards weaker than the beat'n .. but on their demo ball in the video it didn't look like they had the hart that far left..

Ok, let me ask a question on MB for this ball, assuming that the true MB is 6 3/4" from the line between HART and pin.

My No Mercy (pin just right and just under ring) has the HART about 2" right of thumb. That would place the MB like 3 1/2 RIGHT of thumb and an inch or two below. That's maybe a 60* layout for me. If that's true, it's a weaker layout than my other 75* and 90* stuff with traditional MB balls. Right?

The drill on it is for high rev players as well. I tried the #1 on a Beat'n I had before and it wasn't as versatile as I wanted it to be. So with all three having the same drill, IMO the Whup'n is stronger than the Beat'n. Chris Leftwich has seen me use both and he can vouch for my assessment.

i'm assuming you meant the HART is 2"left of the thumb..
that sounds about right as far as the location.. from my experience 60 deg mb is my stronger spot for skid flip.. i have tried 45 and they seem to roll smoother and earlier.. I have tried 70 and it seems like these balls are weaker and longer...i have never gone closer to the PAP than 45

Yep, you are correct, I meant the HART was 2" LEFT of thumb. OOPS!

So, it sounds like going more than 2" left with the HART will make it weaker and longer. If that's the case, the 2" spot must be just right for me.

If you use the MB to layout the ball, and not the CG, it shouldn't be a factor should it? That was my thinking anyway.

I heard that! When the NM's had just come out, a guy here bought one right off. They were drilling it when I walked into the shop. Being the "ball nerd" that I am, I was asked "what do you think this ball will do"?

I took a look at the drilling and, being aware of the HART core system, was HORRIFIED! The driller here was an older man who was just getting the hang of the MB thing and he had apparently used the hart as the mb. I immediately asked him if it was for a lefty, and he said " No, why?"

I then asked him if he had read the drilling sheet before starting, and he said "No, why?"

When I told him about the HART weightblcok and the HART drilling system, he told me there was NO WAY Hammer would do that. So I went to the box, took out the drilling sheet, and showed it to him. He just stood there, cussing and looking REALLY po'd. INSTEAD OF BEING MAD AT HIMSELF FOR NOT READING THE INSTRUCTIONS, HE WAS MAD AT HAMMER FOR F'ING UP THE BALLS DESIGN!

He ended up having to eat the cost of the ball and buying the guy a new one, but I think he plugged it and re-drilled it for someone else to keep from losing it completely. He said it was ignorant to do a ball like that, and wouldn't even try to sell a hammer ball for a long time after that.

that is pretty rediculous of him...I don't know if they did this from the very beginning but mine had a big stop sign on the outside of the box saying to read the instructions.. a big stop sign on the bag the ball was in on the inside of the box.., the drill sheet that said how to drill it and I think another brightly colored piece of paper that said STOP and to read the directions on how to drill a ball.. that is pretty ignorant of him and to blame hammer is just dumb..

I think alot of drillers like to do things the way they have done them for the last 20 to 30 years.. and don't really know the real reason why they do them that way.. They just know that "pin here on ball makes ball do this" "pin there on ball makes ball do that"

Well, I drilled this ball three weeks ago. Layout #1, big weight hole.

The first game of warm up an hour later included an 7 or 8 strike string... then to league play, where I had the front 9. The 10th shot hit carrydowm --- the achilles heel of this ball -- and left a 2-4-5 for a 278.

I have a Widow, Bite, BW Pearl.... It is stronger in the backend then the BWP, and turns the corner well, but with a more arc-like reaction which charactorizes all the No Mercy line. Kind of a "hard arc" reaction. Clears the heads well... does not like carry down, as it gets squirty.

I can use this ball in the fresh oil, then go back to it when the heads break down, as it clears them well. Pleased so far!
