quick answer: buy one! I've been using mine all summer and the ball is money.
I haven't used mine on any heavy patterns but I've adjusted the surface a few times. I suspect it should handle quite a bit of oil. The toxic was a very strong ball with surface.
The lowest grit I've taken it was with a gold scotch brite (~1200 grit cami.) One of my summer leagues used the USBC pattern from NM. The change in ball motion was predictable. Earlier, more midlane but still angular downlane.
My next experiment went the other way. I took the surface to 2000 grit(cami) with 3M wet/dry paper. Compared to the box finish, the length is equivalent but ball motion is enhanced. It's very strong at the breakpoint with no signs of squirt. The ball is still at this surface. I've thrown it on the USBC Pattern, Chameleon, most recently Kegel's Beaten Path pattern.
I've found the EV responds very, very well to changes in axis rotation. When I stay behind it the motion is a very hard arc. Several feet longer, less midlane than my Blue Vibe but a similar ball motion. However once I start to come around at the release, the backend shape is a lot more angular. I would say the overall hook is about the same, just in a different part of the lane.
