Big Blue = big surprise
« on: February 22, 2007, 05:40:24 AM »
In my quest to own just about everything that Hammer has produced in the last 5 years of so, I recently obtained a Big Blue. After reading reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. As is the case with most balls, some people seemed to love it while others loathed it. I think I'm going to love it.

The ball came to me with a 3-4" pin that was located under the ring finger. The cg was just slightly kicked right. I use this layout frequently, so I just plugged the thumb and went to work.

I wanted the ball to be my heavy oil piece, but I decided to try throwing it with the slight shine that it came to me with; I'm glad I did.

On the leftovers of last night's house shot, Big Blue absolutely shined. When rolled up the oil line, the ball read the midlane beautifully and made a gentle, heavy rolling arc that just blew the pins apart. On the flip side, when I decided to swing the ball into the dry a bit further, the ball bounced the dry and made a hard but smooth arcing charge back to the hole, ripping the pocket to shreds upon arrival.

I had a great deal of miss room either way. Pulled shots rolled heavy and smashed, and wide shots came flying back to crush. I don't think that swinging the ball is this one's strength, but it's nice to know that it's an option.

All in all, I'm thrilled with my initial go around with the Big Blue. I'm not sure if it's going to be a good ball for soup, but it does read well. It ran circles around my Hawgzilla in terms of both midlane read through the oil and in total hook when swung to the dry.

I wasn't expecting a great deal from this ball; maybe I should've been. I think this ball is going to be a lot of fun to throw, especially on tighter shots, when control is at a premium.

I bought a big blue when it first came out and thought it was an excellent ball.  Mine had a strong arcing back end and good mid lane read.

Great pick up!

I saw one of these sitting on a ball rack at a local alley. I was tempted to pick it up, but i left it there. Now i am wishing I did take it.

The ball really wasn't a bad ball, just advertised badly.

I don't have the initial spec sheet on the ball that Hammer used to have on the site, but for those who use the pictures of how the ball rolls, it made the ball out to be a strong hook monster....and it wasn't.

The ball did have a little swing for me, but it really shined mostly playing an outside shot, simple down and in.  Strong mid read just like you mentioned.

But for those wanting to sling it out....I think it failed to give them what they wanted.

The ball has a strong MB but a low differential. Together with the particle coverstock, this should work very well in oil and on spotty lanes with an arcing path and good back end power. I have seen some in action (they all disappeared), and it did not look impressive in terms of back end hook, but the ball was IMHO not designed for hockey stick like hooks. Rather a rolly, controllable oil piece, and I'd set it up accordingly.

I guess the ball received some bad comments because of roll-out due to the coverstock, and the "weak" differential when people expect the ball to move across all the lane - the marketing had created much hype and expectation then.

In the most part the Big Blue is a solid particle black widow without the added flipblock that gives the black widow the extra length you see out of it.
