Need help??????
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:18:41 AM »
Hello all,

I'm new at posting on the board, although I've been reading the board for quite a while.  Anyway, here's my story.

Our city just built a new center that opened in December.  Everyone was extremely excited about it and work started a team for league.  I had never bowled seriously until then.  Not knowing anything about bowling balls, we traveled out of town, bought power grooves and started league.  After the first few weeks of league, it was pretty plain the groove just wasn't going to cut it.  We bowl on synthetics with medium/heavy oil, it looks like ice. A house ball had as much hook as the groove.

So most of us sold the grooves and moved up to better balls.  I bought an OverTime and have had pretty good luck with it.  My average would agree.  Now that I have become addicted to bowling I'm looking for more and better balls and do like the ebonite/hammer products.  Our house is mainly brunswick and columbia, I like to use different equipment than everyone else.

My bowling style would be considered a stroker, 13.5-14 mph seems to be a good speed for a good reaction out of my OT on our lanes.  I don't have a ton of revs, medium at best. I adjusted the cover on the OT to a Gray scothbrite and that seems to be the best surface so far.

I have been looking at a few ebo/hammer balls and need some advice.  I really like the looks and specs of the widow.  When compared to the OT, I assume this should be a stronger ball. I am fairly sure of getting this one.

The next ball I don't know.  I want a super ball for those extra greasy nights. I have looked at the One line and like the looks of the hawg zilla, but in no way, shape or form do I have a Tommy Jones throw.

Any suggestion would be great.

Thanks

Chad

I am like you! I am more of a Norm Duke bowler (Down and in). My bowling alley is Heavy oil. In the Hawg line up, the Hawg Zilla, and Hawg are the most hookingest in the Hawg Line up. The Road Hawg, and Hawg Wild are the least. I have a Hawg Wild and love it! The ball hits like a nuclear bomb and it doesn't know what oil is. I don't throw a big hook, and with my Hawg Wild I can swing across the whole lane and it will still come back, or I can throw it from the 10 to 8 board and it will not over react!!! I LOVE IT!!! Anyways most people say the Road Hawg is 4-5 boards more hook than the Hawg Wild. I don't know why anyone would want or need more hook than what my ball gives. I don't know about the Ones or the Black Widow but I know that the Black Widows core looks deadly!!! That is just my opinion. If you look on HammerBowling.com under the meassage boards there is probably better bowlers who could help you.....

I would also agree with Pincrusher, take a look at the Hawg Wild. I have a second one waiting to drill up with a 5 1/2 pin to PAP kicking the GC 1/4-1/2 " right. The first one works great for me on med to med/heavy oil. If you are looking for a heavy oil ball, this probably will not be the ball for you, but med/heavy, it slams the pins everywhere.

Thanks for the input.  I have looked at the hawg wild and have seen a few thrown at our center.  The guys that are getting a lot of movement have an incredible amount of revs to get through the slick stuff.

I guess what I was asking is will the Hawg zilla or One line work for a stroker or do they require so many revs to make them work properly?

Thanks again

I have seen both the hawg and i have the one and the big one. i dont have a ton of lifts, but my big one and one come thru like champs. my buddy has the hawg, but she says it takes a while to learn how to control it, but i believe it gets the job done.

Another vote for Hawg Wild.

I still have much love for the BIG RIG too.  This ball really
put me on the road to higher avg and big games.  I still consider
myself a down and in type guy when the conditions allow, and nothing
has been able to top the BIG RIG in my opinion.  It does struggle
a little w/ carrydown though.

Other balls to consider are the just discontinued XXcel and XXXCel from Ebonite. You might get them on discount. Both ball are great for medium-oily to oily conditions. The XXcel OOB goes quite long and has a hard arcing back end, the XXXCel is a sanded reactive oil monster with an eralier lane read OOB. They both perform well, and even look good
