Hammer equipment
« on: January 09, 2010, 11:05:47 AM »
I took about 10 years off from bowling and I use to throw alot of Hammer stuff my favorite ball by far and the ball I scored the best with and made a few bucks on was the 3D offset. I've drilled up a a couple of Storm products since I've came back a Virtual Gravity and Energy and it doesn't seem like they match up to well for me. I'm a stroker so I don't have alot of hand in the ball. I'm thinking of switching back to Hammer but is there anything in there line up like the 3D offset or something in another product like I should try? Thanks for the help.

Which one did you have...the original Violet one?

What exactly didn't you like about the VG / VE on your conditions?  That would help us make some suggestions for you.

Giving a blind recommendation I have a hard time not recommending the Black Widow series...there is just something about the gas mask core.  Which one would depend on the conditions that you bowl on.

Yes I had a few of the violet ones...It had a great reaction to it it seemed to rev up pretty quick and had alot left at the end, which seemed perfect for me who doesn't have alot of hand in the ball and has a faster ball speed 18-19mph...I like the Virtual Gravity at first but seemed to lose it's back end reaction and now it just seems to roll out...the Virtual Energy didn't want to hook in the oil but was way to stong of the dry, I did like how it would rev up and had a good snap at the end put the over/under with it wasn't good...I bowl of course on a house shot which is normal top hat, but I've been bowling some tournaments again and have seen a few oil patterns from oil to dry...

Hmm...in regards to your VE I might suggest changing the surface and knocking off the polish.  That will make it read in the oil better and be less sensative to down lane oil and the wet/dry line.

For a new ball within the Hammer line-up I would still point you towards the widow line and in particular the Widow Sting of the 4 within their current line-up.  If you are open to dulling down a polished ball I've seen great things out of dull'd down Widow Venoms too, but I still prefer the Sting.

For a ball with more pop on the backend I might wait for the Jigsaw Corner to come-up.  From what I've seen of it thus far (we got a seed ball) it's pretty impressive.

Outside of hammer I have a hard time not saying something about  Columbia's Full Swing, Global 900's Break Out or Roto-Grip's Mutant Cell.  They are all pretty solid choices as well, with varying degrees of backend pop.

fishbowl,

Something that needs to be saidis, if you haven't already been told, todays equipment soaks up MUCH more oil than the older balls did and need to be cleaned/maintained at a much higher level to keep them performing.

You stated that you liked the VG at first, but it seemed to lose its performance. That lost performance is a sign that the ball has soaked up some oil and, most likely, smoothed its surface out with use.

A good, deep cleaning and putting the surface back to the original finish may restore much of that balls original performance.

Modern equipment needs to be thouroughly cleaned after EVERY set, and de-oiled and re-surfaced about every 50 games, depending on your cleaning regimen and the balls performance level.
