Changed the surface on my Black Widow,,,
« on: September 13, 2006, 03:48:00 AM »
and boy is this thing sweet now. I have a spinner and enjoy experimenting with covers. I have 2 BW's and love them both, but I decided to change one. BW #1 drilled 3x5 I took the cover down to 360 abralon and then hit it with Rough Buff. Man is this ball sweet now! I loved it before with OOB, but I love it even more now! Just thought I would share.

what type of reaction does it give you?  I must say, thats a pretty extreme cover change seeing how its OOB is 4000 grit.

"3x5"?
Is that 3" pin to PAP and
5" MB to PAP?

While I like Rough Buff in general, the thing that bothers me most is where does the ball wind up? I know I started with 360 grit (as in your case), but unless I use the exact same amount of compound for the same amount of time with the same amount of pressure .... It seems like one has to recall the exact level of shine, each time to re-do the ball, re-surface it or just re-fresh it. I suppose if you do it regularly, you'll recall the general area/range.

Given that on Brunswick balls, the 220 grit plsu RB winds up around 1000 compound polish, I suppose 360 plus RB winds up around 1500 grit polish???

It still clears the heads nicely, but now starts about 5-6 feet earlier and is a very hard arc that continues driving and never lets up! Even though it starts earlier, it seems to store more energy for the backend than OOB.

Yes. Pin to Pap 3" MB to pap is 5" and under thumb. Pictures are in my profile. However they were taken before the change.

I would have to agree with that. I seems to be close to 1200-1500 light polish.

I took my BW down to 2000g Abralon one day for a slightly tigher shot and it was awesome.... retained its power, hit like a tank! I brought it back to 4000g after that night and it still works just perfect for that slightly drier condition.

Unfortunately, we don't often know in advance what shot to expect, and we just can't prep a cover just in time as needxed. So... I am debating whether to get a second BW to keep at 1000 or 2000 grit, or just get the Zilla for those tighter shots.
