Black Widow Experiment

Hey Hammer guru's, I am thinking about trying something different with my Black Widow.

I have had this ball for quite a while, numerous games, already paid for itself many times over, and now it is pretty much dead.

I took a scotch brite to it, and now it is even worse (i put too much surface, and it is burning up I think??)  I plan on putting it in a ball polisher for just under the maximum amount of time and see if I can make this ball something to use for some lighter patterns.

I know polishing a BW is not usually a good idea, but it was either do this, sell it for super cheap or toss it in the trash.....so I am thinking trying something different is the best option.

Any ideas other than mine, or is this a good move?

Why not just give it a good hot water bath or two and get it resurfaced?  If you put it in one of those "Lustre King" machines to polish it, you're just making a bad situation worse, IMO.

You know I hear all sorts of horror stories about using the house polishing machines, but I have not once had an issue.  I used to put my Ultimate Inferno in one every couple months and the ball was perfect.

I refuse to use the old ones...I think they were Brunswick because they put a nasty coat on, but the newer gray ones put a nice polish on the rock for me.

I agree with J Mac. I think your best bet is to give it a hot water bath. Search in the forum and you should find a good explaination of how to do it. It is not very difficult. Then I would take it to your local pro shop and ask them to take the surface to 4000 abralon which is the out of box surface. Or you could get a complete resurface as J Mac suggested. I have revived a couple of my friends BW with a hot water bath and bringing the surface back to 4000.

Give it a bath in the dishwasher; make sure the drying cycle is off.

Regarding the Lustre King, if they used a rubbing compound, it's fine; some or all of the really old ones used a wax which clogs the pores and kills the ball, making it VERY straight and hit weakly.

Sand it to 400, bathe it. Sand it to 2000 grit and max out on the Lustre King; it will go straighter but not straight.
