Black Widow MB Placement?
« on: February 09, 2007, 10:29:02 PM »
I have a guy who purchased The One and a Black Widow (I tried to have him look at something else as I felt these two balls were similar, but he definitely wanted both).  Last weekend we drilled the The One.  And like most other requests, he wanted it to go as long as possible and then hook as much as possible on the backend.  I used a 4" pin to PAP and a 4.5" MB to PAP. with the pin above the fingers.  He took the ball out and threw it a few shots and came back saying that it didn't hook for him (we had left it in box condition).  I said OK, so we took the surface down to 2000 grit matte and repeated, 1000 grit and repeated, and finally 500 grit abralon.  Now the guy has a decent amount of revs, but has to throw harder than anyone I've seen in quite some time...  I'm going to guess 25 mph on most shots.  Again, these were balls he bought and brought in to have drilled.. not recommendations.. LOL.

Well, today he wants the widow drilled up.  I just have a feeling that the ball is going to have a hard time making the corner for him as well.  I know you can only do so much with layout, and then it comes to surface prep, but what type of layout would you recommend?  Just because of the excessive speed (and difficulty getting the ball to react), I was thinking of using a 3 3/8" pin to PAP (somewhere below fingers) and the MB out towards the VAL...  I'm not sure what this would work out as far as distance.. maybe 2.5-3"?  What do you think?  Or should I try and talk him into making a swap for the Action, Vertigo, or ultimate inferno we have in the shop in his weight?

PAP is 4 7/8" over and 3/16" up.  Axis rotation is probably 60 degrees...

The Black Widow is not the best ball for this guy's specs.  You might try doing a rev leverage drilling and 500 Abralon for the surface.  Make sure balance hole is at least 2" below the mid-line.

Does he have other equipment that you could check the layouts on?

I would put the pin belwo the fingers.  I would also put the pin about 4.5" to 5" from his PAP.  On asymmetrical balls pins distance of 3 3/8 to 6 1/4 will flare about the same.  This is a lot different than the symmetrical.  Well pin distance of 4.5" to 6 1/4" will give more of a forward roll type reaction.  Pin distance of 3 3/8" to 4.5" gives more of a side rotation reaction.  I know this doesn't make sense but it's true.

Put the pin 4.5" top 5" from his PAP.  Put the pin belwo his fingers.  Kick the MB on his VAL.  This MB location is going to help the ball get into it's forward roll sooner(which you probably already know).  Then place the Balance hole wherever you feel needs to go.

This should help give him a good reaction.

Mo Rich web site has a good basis for layouts on asymmetrical balls.  I find those to be pretty good.
