Just bought an Acid for the wife...UPDATE 3/16
« on: March 05, 2010, 01:52:38 PM »
Found one on closeout and got a 14-pounder for my wife, a righty stroker who is somewhat rev-challenged. She''s currently trying to make do with a couple of my old balls, a Roto Grip Silver Streak SE and a Track Solution PowerPlus EX, but neither are offering her enough grip. The PPEX is playable for her once the lanes break down but she struggles on the fresh.

The question for you guys is mainly this: What can we expect out of this ball, and how would you drill it if it were you? Her SSSE and PPEX both have high pins with CG kicked slightly positive on both. I''m thinking pin-down on this ball, maybe below the bridge. Her PAP is pretty short, around 3 over 1 up, but she''s covering a good-sized track so she''s not spinning it.

I see that it comes 4000 Abralon -- do we need to take this down a bit? She needs a little help friction-wise.

Jess,
While I don't own one, I've seen several thrown. They're sneaky strong, but steady moving and they don't have the hard snap on the back end. More of a steady arc move.
Pin down does sound good for your wife, but as always, I'd respectfully let her throw in front of the driller and let the driller and your wife talk about what would work best for her in regards to what she wants the ball to do against her delivery, ball speed, etc, etc.
Keep us posted on the outcome............

Chris,

Thanks for the note. The driller in this case will be me. I've got a hobbyist shop attached to my house and drill stuff for her, me and a couple of other friends.

Her biggest problem is a lack of practice time and a lack of consistency, both in ball speed and release. Nothing we do is going to offer a miracle solution, but I know that her current equipment is hindering her a bit especially if there's some volume to the shot. I want this ball to be stronger than her SSSE, thereby making it the strongest ball in her bag. That ball is currently at 1000 Abralon with no polish, but it's got a high number of games on it and I didn't find the SSSE to be a real strong ball to begin with.

JessN16...

I will not go as far as saying that everyone should have a Rico drill in their arsenal, but I am close to saying that. If your wife does not have a Rico in her arsenal, it might be some food for thought.

I'd thought about that. My only concern will be whether it would cause her to hit any holes. I'll ask over on the Layouts forum but her upper bowtie is way off the fingers as it is, so maybe it will be OK.

If not Rico, I can just push the pin up a couple of inches and it will be under her bridge.

Update: Ball came in this week, we decided to go pin-under-bridge with the CG straight down from the ring, maybe kicked out ever so slightly. Finish was left box.

She went out tonight and rolled her second- or third-highest set of the year with it. Really nice reaction from this ball. Not too early, but early enough where it gave her a better midlane read than her other stuff. And it has nice continuation on the backend.

She was all smiles after the set.

Jess.. Don't be scared to add a flare hole to that acid to give her more upfront if needed.. the acid is a very strong ball.. and is very under rated..
--------------------
Hmm..Lets see what I have in this bag.. A bright red Mission, a Nasty Spider, something to break the Lanes with, and a green Avalanche.. how can I lose?
....HG-300(2006 w/Desert Heat)...299 (03/15/09 w/Agent Orange)...HS-776 (Hot Sauce Pearl & Ebonite Magic)

Thanks for the suggestion. She was getting about 3-4 inches of flare tonight. We also made a change with her thumbhole (different ovaling, a little bigger overall) to give her more of an early release. With those changes, she starting getting a few more revs on the ball. I don't think she's going to need more flare unless she starts doing more tournaments or bowling in houses that have more volume than ours.

The Acid is a tremendous ball with some solid power at the pins. The coverstock is also very tuneable when needed.

hey jess,

well.. i have an acid also and i got it layed out 4x4, and am a stroker for the most part.  i like my acid, but its really lane specific for me.  i got mine down to 1000 abralon or maybe 2000 grit, and on fresh oil, i get some over/under with it, but i think its due to the way i throw, im kinda rev challenged, but i found mine to work best when the lanes are drier.  but to answer your question, i think having the pin slightly below the ring finger with the cg kicked out, or place the pin closer to the pap (strong position), and that should help.  of course it also depends on how fast she throws the ball, release, etc.

good luck.

p.s. im starting to like my acid, i just need to find the right conditions, just like with any ball.  also you can always get her a hammer jacked, bw nasty, jigsaw, or corner.
