Hammer ball MOST like the....
« on: July 17, 2007, 11:55:09 AM »
Zone Classic Green pin. I have my ZC laid out with the pin below the bridge, mb about 3" right of thumb. any suggestions on a Hammer ball that will provide the same type of reaction as the ZC with a similar layout? Thinking black widow pearl drilled the same, or maybe a Black widow drilled maybe pin up mb out 3 inches or so? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Matt

From what I remember the classic was a smoother rolling ball. More of an arc shape. I think either of the BW's would be more angular. Of the newer equipment I think an Anger would work similar.

I wouldn't go with an anger because i think it is more strong overall compared to a zone classic. Id go with a Toxic, because from what ive seen, it gives a similar look, with just a little more snap.

Thanks in advance guys. I'm going to be getting a few Hammers here pretty soon, I'm just not sure which I should expect to be similar to the ZC, so that I can drill it to react similarly. B/C to be honest, a pin under drilling is not usually my first choice, but the ZC rolls PERFECT for me, so, I'm willing to go out of the norm.

And btw, overall, you're right, it's not very strong. I'd say scale of 1-10 it's probably about a 6 maybe a low 7.

Keep the advice coming guys!

well first of all the zone classic has the original activator coverstock on it from the original inferno therefor it is a pearl cover...

the zone classic is not a super strong ball, but definitely has high pearl characteristics...

i would suggest putting a weaker drilling on something like a doom, or maybe a stronger drilling on a blue vibe since both of these coverstocks are pearl...

i think a weaker drilled Doom would be your best bet to get close to a zone classic... the only problem is that the Doom is Symmetrical and the Zone Classic is Asymmetrical...

if you wanted to go with a pearl that is asymmetrical to be more like the zone classic the closest thing would be the Black Widow Pearl in that respect... a much weaker drilling would be needed because it is much more aggressive off the dry than the Zone Classic...

before i was on staff with Hammer i had 4 Zone Classics since they had come out, so i know their reaction pretty well... its very difficult also to compare a Brunswick and Hammer ball because the sheer dynamics of what they are supposed to do is completely different... but

the best suggestions would be to get a black widow pearl drilled weak.. or a doom drilled weak...

thanks guys, appreciate the insight. hate to put a weak drill on such a strong reacting ball like the BWP, then again, i want a reaction close the the ZC, so whatever it takes right? again, i appreciate the help guys.

The Pain is discontiued

I have the Black Widow and the  Anger.  The Anger is a much more angular ball then the Black Widow for me.  The Black Widows I've seen roll have been much more arc-y.

it all depends on drill patterns and lane conditions, sometimes you will get a ball like the anger to have more pop than a black widow...

the oil distribution and pattern thats out on a lane can definitely affect what type of reaction you get...

on paper and for the majority of people in general the anger will be more rolly and the black widow will be more of a smooth arc and then a snappier backend...

but it all depends...
