Blade Particle Ping Above the Bridge
« on: March 13, 2004, 12:32:01 AM »
Need some help with this drilling.  My driller says this ball will go down long and with a sharp turn at the end but it never happened.  Is there anything I can do to help?  I am a stroker so I don't put a lot of revs on the ball.  When the ball comes back from the ball return I might have 5 oil rings around the ball.  Probably waste some money drilled ping above the bridge.  It was suppose be drilled for heavy oil.  Any suggestions?

You either want a ball for heavy oil, or one that goes long and snaps.  You can't have it both ways.  Where is the CG located?

If you want length, pin 4.5-5.5" from your PAP is good.  Typically the pin is over the fingers somewhere, but again it depends on your PAP.  You then tailor the hook shape by where you place the CG.

If you want the ball for heavy oil, usually the pin is placed 3-4" from your PAP.  Usually the pin ends up near (outside) and below your ring finger.  Again the CG is placed to fine tune the hook shape.

The more info you give us, the more we can help.  Revs, style, axis and tilt,  Positive Axis Point, average, lane type and conditions, line you are trying to play....

Well I don't know too much about the drilling terms.  I know PAP is Positive Axis Point) but I don't know where that is on my ball.  I know my ball speed is about 16-17MPH and I am trying to play up 10, or 12 swing out to 8 board.  Lane condition is medium to heavy I think.  I can play on the 8 th board for a while before it gets dry up.  The lanes we have in our house here in German is crazy.  One day we got dry lanes and one day we get soups.  I am just a little furstrated because the ball I bought was suppose to be for heavy oil.  What would be a good heavy oil ball in general from hammer?

I'm not up on Hammer's line, but the Blade Particle should be fine except for flooded conditions.  The Diesel Particle will handle a bit more oil than the Blade Particle.  It won't necessarily hook a bunch more, but it might fight through oil that the Blade will not.

If the Blade is the only ball you have, I wouldn't alter the cover since you see many different lane conditions.  If you want the Blade to handle more oil (at the expense of being versatile), sand the cover to 600 or even 400.  Ebonite/Hammer recommends Abralon pads on their equipment.  Scotch-Brite should be a safe equivalent, but sand paper is generally not recommended for particles.

Remember, particles don't always out hook reactives, they just will give you some hook when reactives will not.  Reactives skid on oil and hook a bunch on dry.  Particles spread the hook evenly throughout the entire lane.

Thanks for helping.  I do have many other balls and it seems the Track Triple Threat was the best hitting ball I got right now and it is drilled label leverage.  So I could alter the cover stock or plug it for a more agressive drill.  I was thinking about Track Animal or the Hammer Big Blue Pearl.
