Jim Pratt!  You used plastic balls when you were on tour.  Do you still bowl any events?

It's likely what you are now is better than most of us here.  Thanks for passing on what you learned.  Have you heard about seen any comparisons between the new and old blue hammers?

It depends if the old blue hammer you have had any track flare.  I actually think that the old cover might be stronger than the new one but you could have little or no flare on the old blue hammers.  The new blue hammers should roll better on house shots because of the track flare helping to tame down some of the wet/dry ball reaction.  I had 3 different original blue hammers and they were all different.  One was horrible because it had absolutlely no track flare.  The other 2 were very good and they had a little.  Not enough to create a gap between flares but enough that it wasn't completely hitting the same oil ring the entire time.  If both covers were prepped the same, I would say the new one would hook a board or two more than the original.

How do the two balls compare as far as deflection in the pocket.  My ball deflects a little and really demands that it be thrown well in order for it to work well.  And I really like that but a little help once and awhile doesn't hurt.

 

My blue has some track flare.  The oil ring is about 1/2 or so at it's thickest point and tapers off.  How does that compare to your former hammers?

That's hard to say, deflection is based off of a number of factors.  I think that you will see more deflection if you are trying to get the ball to hook in the back part of the lane.   If you play straighter angles through the front, the ball will generally have more energy left at the pocket.  I think the "help" in this ball is the area you'll have on tougher conditions where everything must be more precise. 
 
1/2 inch is pretty tight.  The "good" hammers that I had about an 1 to 1 1/2 inches of flare.  Now I do have a higher rev rate which will generally give me a wider gap of flare anyways.  The new blue hammer I saw an 1/8 of an inch gap between flare rings.  Probably about 4 inches total.

That flare you see on the new hammer is about what I see on my labeled drilled natural.  Did your hammers have any pin length?  My pin is directly in the center and it's label drill.

 


Usually, I will leave a 7 pin when I get a little too much side turn on it and it rolls too late.  For me, the blue is most effective when I can get it in a forward roll early.  It snaps out the corners and it carries light hits really well.  High flush hits do not leave the 10 pin as most resin balls would.  Overall, I am quite satisfied with the original blue hammer on house shots.  

 

edit:  I checked the flare ring on the track today while I was bowling on a fresh house shot and it's about an inch in width at the widest point.   

 

2nd edit:  Right after I wrote about the 10 pin not standing on high flush hits I left when one when the  6 pin flew straight up on a slightly high flush hit and didn't even touch the 10 pin.
 
Got this pic of it yesterday.  I stayed behind it with a minimum amount of hook to pick up a spare.

I have a natural and slate blue gargoyle that I have not drilled. Have tried polishing your natural? How does this ball compare to the natural polished?
