How should I drill/prep my Hi-Rev?
« on: October 13, 2005, 01:47:07 AM »
Hey guys/gals,

I just worked out a trade deal to pick up a Hi-Rev (the new one) and a Vicious Pearl and I'm looking for your advice on how to prep/drill them, particularly the Hi-Rev.

My specs:
RH
Hi speed (18-20 mph)
Above average revs but certainly not a true cranker or anything
High track, usually within 1-1.5" from ring

Here is my current arsenal:
Flood: Total Shock & Awe
Heavy: Real Deal
Med-Heavy: Blade Reactive (shined up, sort of skid-snap)
Medium (Pearl): Absolute Inferno
Medium (Solid): Hi-Rev
Med-Light: Blade Pearl
Med-Light: Blazing Inferno
Light: Bullet
Spares: Target Zone

Obviously, I have a bit of overlap in the lower ends. I just love pearl reactives! Anyhow, how should I drill and prep my Hi-Rev to maximize its effectiveness as a benchmark ball in this rotation. I'ver heard others liken its reaction to that of the Ebonite V2. That's what I'd be looking for. I want a smooth reaction throughout the lane, nothing too jumpy. As for the Vicious Pearl, I'm thinking about drilling that to be my skid-snap piece for lighter conditions. What do you all think? How should I drill and prep that one? Any help you all could give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

pics of mine are in profile. I like it only if i can use it. The drilling which is aggressive is to unconsistant at the break point. I would recoment you just put a standard 45 degree drilling with the pin and CG located like i do on my Throttle Up (pic in profile) thats a great drilling, i use it on 2 balls now, and have used it one many in the past.

Since you are looking for a "benchmark" ball, I am assuming you are looking for a "benchmark" reaction.    Therefore I would suggest a semi aggressive pin placement with a medium strong CG placement.   With this layout this ball will read the lane and allow you to make moves depending on the reaction.

i.e.  Pin to PAP 4.5", and the CG swung out 1/2" to 4" from CG.   Might even put a hole on your PAP to even it out more.

Vicious Pearl-   wasn't a big fan of this piece-  I never like the original vicious cores.   I did like the Particle Pearl cores alot.    I don't really have a good suggestion for you based on my limited success with this nug.

I know what you mean about the original Vicious core. For me, it wasn't always an easy matchup. I really liked the Vicious Particle (green-yellow) but I hated the original solid reactive vicious. In any case, the pearl vicious is more of a novelty experiment. As for the Hi-Rev, would something like a rico drilling work? Just in case you're not familiar, I'm talking about pin in grip center, cg right of thumb hole. But does that drilling only work on asymetrical balls? I loved the way that my Zone Classic with that layout rolled. It was smooth and powerful. What do you think?

JPR,

To be honest, I don't know. lol. For some reason the ZC never had that problem. That is kind of strange considering I just had to have a hole punched into my Absolute to keep me from clipping the fingers on that one, and that ball is simply pin below ring, cg stacked below. I'm not really sure why I wasn't clipping that one. That was just the drilling that was on it when I got it so I stuck with it.

Jason:

How much difference is there in the core of the High Rev and the original Vicious core? On paper they look the same..........

BTW: I love my High Rev when I can find enough head oil to throw it effectively

Hey Gene, once you get it sorted let me know how you like the High Rev.  This is one of those balls that I keep ALMOST picking up.

Huh....believe it or not I don't know as if I ever really paid attention to the fact that they were similar.

The balls seem to roll differently.
