People always try to go with the pin/axis drill for stuff like that. I have heard stuff about equipment flaring oddly with that drill, and few people get what they think about that drill. I have gone with my pin close to my axis in the past and I have found the drill to be rather early and extremely smooth. It is not a layout that will "kill" a core as some believe. Instead, it tends to "kill" one's tilt and rotation as the ball checks up quickly without much of a move off the dry.
It serves as a drill for absolute, complete, insane over/under, or patterns with screaming backends. For what you are looking for, it would seem like putting the pin far away from your PAP would be the better option. Here you would be getting less flare, and with a high pin above mid, you should also get the length that you'll need.
