Psycho Raw Hammer - Mini Review from Shark Pattern!
« on: June 26, 2008, 05:34:45 PM »
First of all, I was a little skeptical once I punched this ball up because I put a layout on it that has been very hit or miss on my equipment but had a good feeling it would work well on the new Psycho. (The only other time it worked out well was on my Second Black Widow the Summer it came out, and it only worked well after i polished it and then it rolled like a champ!)

Pin 3-4
Top 3.5

Layout: 5.5 x 3 , Pin under middle finger, cg kicked at a 25 degree angle with a
hole down low (7/8 inch bit, 3 inches down)

Static Weight Distribution:

Side: 5/8 oz.
Finger/Thumb: 0 oz.

Cover prep: box finish

The motion:

I can honestly say, I am not shocked at all at how clean this ball is through the heads with a great ability to get a consistent smooth read through the midlane, and a continuous backend reaction. I was standing about 23 board, throwing 15 to 10 i had hold if i got it to 12 and had a small amount of room if i got it to 8, i was throwing it fairly slow to start, and had to move a couple boards right at times to square up to the shot a bit, but where I was bowling has a fairly burnt track so I knew at some point the Shark would start drying up in that area to create a small bounce and some forgiveness.

If i didnt come around the ball correctly however, since bowling on the shark, I paid the price with 2-10 splits and a washout, I even threw one straight out the window and missed the 3 pin ont he first shot in the second frame even and somehow got 5 and spared it up, I then squared up off that shot moving to 20 board hitting 15 out to ten and throwing the next 8 for 268.

my games were 170 (easy spares missed, left the Razyr in the car oops), 268 , 241, 221 for 900

definitely am extremely impressed with the balls motion and hard hitting power, I love how this ball keeps the pins a bit lower on the deck when hitting. Also, as you can tell from the video on hammerbowling.com , the ball is gorgeous going down the lane. I can't tell you how many of the bowlers were wondering what I was throwing. Coming over and all of them seemed very intrigued by the ball motion, color and hitting power.

Another GREAT addition to the Hammer Family, a great compliment to the current equipment in the line...

can't wait to drill a second one in the coming weeks, I will post another review after this weekend from bowling on the Viper pattern at the regional.

Regardless if you were a fan of the doom and toxic, or one, or the other... this ball really continues the brands ever growing quality of equipment. I would say with proper drilling this ball will be a huge hit for all you Hammerheads out there!

Good luck and good bowling to all!

P.S. and of course, if anyone wants to know more or has any questions, I am more than happy to answer, pm me anytime.

How does this piece compare to the Toxic?  It seems like the Psycho may be a Toxic with enhanced midlane, due to the change in core shape.  That would seem to make it more playable on tougher patterns (if that assertion is correct).

I would say that the Toxic got through the heads about the same, but was definitely not as predictable in the midlane or off of the break point.

The toxic didnt really stand up as hard as the Psycho does, the toxic was far more of a skid snappy product. The Psycho is more of a rolly pearl, that still has a great backend motion that is predictable and easy to read.

I would have thought out of the box being so glossed it would have been a little inconsistent to start, but i was way wrong. I had a little room with this ball and forgiveness with the out of box surface.

The core technology and Cover technology has changed and grown for the Psycho. I would say there is a better comparison between the Doom and the Psycho, and I can honestly say that off the break point there is higher predictability from the Psycho than from what I saw with any of my Doom's (and I loved the Doom and was sad to see it go). But, the Psycho is truly a winner and anyone looking for a medium aggressive pearl should definitely look into this fine piece of equipment.

That sounds really good.  I never had a Doom, but everything that I saw from that ball was positive, and if the Psycho is even more consistent and readable, then it should be a really great piece.  That was personally what I though was missing from the series.

You have the Anger as the smooth rolling solid and the Pain as a similar piece for less oil (than the Anger).  Then they had the Doom and Toxic, both of which seemed much more angular due to the pearl polished surface.  Now they come out with something that sounds like it fits in between these two pairs with the Psycho.  It definately seemed like they needed to change the core of the series in order to obtain this reaction with a pearl shell.
