Ok Ive got a No mercy, I read people talking about using a green pad on the no mercy an didnt know if they meant a green kitchen pad or is there one from the pro-shop? Also If I use the green pad what reaction will this give me an can I do it by hand?
Thanks

Green Scotch Brite. It's equivalent to about 600 grit but will shine up fairly quickly as it absorbs oil. I use Abralon pads much more than Scotch Brite as they give the balls surface a smoother and more consistent finish. I have my NM at 2000 Abralon vs. the 4000 oob.

were do I get Abralon pads? Is the green scotch brite at walmart or food store?
-
scotch brit is at walmart. I used it on the No Mercy and like the reaction that it gives me in the oil, but like said before it does shine up quick with the oil, just have to hit it again with the green pad as soon as that happens

So I should shine it only when it has oil on it from lane?

Also where can I buy "Abralon pads" wallshot spoke of?

Can I apply this by hand or is this for use with spinner?
thanks alot
I will check back later

I have the #6 drilling on my ball. It went a little to long, so I hit it with 600 grit sandpaper by hand, using water just to knock the shine of. It woke the ball up, 225,231,205. The cover is high maintenance though, so you need to touch it up after every use. I will use a green scotch bright pad for that. 2cents

Do you wet the sandpaper or the ball when doing this?

Joe,
Sandpaper needs to be automotive if possible (which you can get at walmart or automotive stores) and it is wet/dry. If you are going to take a piece of sandpaper to a ball there are a few things to know.
1. NEVER use sandpaper on a particle ball. It will take particles off instead of bringing more to the surface.
2. You always want to wet the ball and sandpaper to reduce the amount of friction between the two surfaces.
3. Larger grit sandpaper can badly damage a ball, wet or not. (80, 120)
My personal advice is to use Abralon or a scotch brite pad for adjustments. Even with these a little water never hurts as long as you wipe off the water after you are finished; but water is not absolutely necessary when using these. If you are using a spinner be sure to continuously turn the ball and hit it from several different angles so that you don't just have a ball that was sanded on two sides. Hope this helps, good luck with your No Mercy.

Joe,
Those are simply blocks that hold sandpaper disks specially designed for ball resurfacers. Many people buy them to use by hand, however, because it easily contours to the ball. Regardless, you could buy one and some sandpaper disks and do everything yourself...even those are wet/dry (up to a point). If that is the option you think you will be looking at, I would buy everything from 220 and up so as to be able to sand down and back up to desired surface to get rid of any dirt and/or belt marks. IMO those are more for full-on restoration though, not for a between sets surface adjustments. I will try to check back soon before heading to league.

Wow Joe, you are really on top of this and I appreciate that. THOSE are exactly what you would need for the mid-set adjustments. Abralon pads are much more expensive than a scotch brite or a package of sandpaper, but they work better and are less harmful on your equipment. As Daddy always says, "You get what you pay for" and that cliche has never been more true. If you want full resurface, get the blocks with some sandpaper assortments; if you are wanting small adjustments and minor cleaning, go with abralon. (That is, of course, onless you can afford to resurface with abralon too, in which case we may need to speak more often...)

180
360
500
1000

Joe,
The thing to remember about sanding or using abralon is to know the basic premise of ball surface. The lower the grit, the more surface the ball will have. So, if you are wanting the ball to grab the lane and roll earlier, then you want to go for a lower grit. If you have a flood, then I would go 500 (just like the Infinite One oob). If you have a good MED/Heavy, then go for around 1000 or so. The lighter the condition, the shinier you want the ball and the less surface you want so that the ball can get down the lane without burning off all energy it may have. More oil calls for more surface and vice versa. Of course this is only basic and depends on how you throw the ball (speed, tilt, rotation, etc). For basic cleaning, I would go 1000, 2000, 4000 in order to get dirt and bring you back to whatever surface you are looking for.

Not sure but wallshot said No mercy was 4000 oob. My league has Fresh oil its a morning league an most always MED/Heavy oil. Is there a grit that I would mess the ball up with? It seems like the oil in the lane will make it shine again? Is that correct?
Thanks
Joe

Joe,
There really is no grit that will mess up the ball onless you go FAR too low on the grit of sandpaper. As long as you do not go beyond 220 as the lowest grit then you should be okay. Even then you do not push hard, you just need to hit the surface as easily as possible. The No Mercy is 4000 oob, but you would want to go lower (to around 1000) to get rid of dirt and marks, and then go back up to what you want the surface to be. If you like the reaction that you got out of the box, then go back with it. If you have good oil and fresh backends, then 4000 would be ideal. If you need it to roll a little earlier, then go to 2000 or 1000 depending on what you are looking for. As for shine, to lower the grit you go the more maintenance it will require granted that more surface means more oil absorption. Going back to 4000 will cause you to have less maintenance, but it may or may not be what you are looking for.

Do I need to buy 1000 grit to clean.
Then hit it with 2000 or 4000 to bring it back to where I need it, after I clean it?
-
Also Matt you've been a great help, thanks for your time!
-
That is what I would do if I wanted to bring back alot more reaction. You could even go lower and go all the way up depending on how clean you want it to be. If you are just wanting quick cleaning, you could just go to 2000 and back to 4000. Hope I've been able to help, but I have an hour drive before league so I'm outta here. Any more questions, feel free to send me a message and I will try to check later tonight when I return.
