Need a little help
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:09:24 PM »
Hi guys.  I've been bowling for a while now and have been self-taught the whole time.  Never been in a league.  Would like to soon.  I might as well, I spend about as much just going every week during open bowling.  But anyway this is what I'm curious about.  I just picked up a new Burn Raw Hammer, 14 lb.  I love it but think I need something a little less aggressive for dryer lanes.  My Brother has a Vibe Emerald that he doesn't want anymore.  Only problem is its a 15 pound ball and it seems a little bit too heavy.  I'm not sure what a weight hole is for...would this be a reason to drill one??  If so?  Is it a good idea? Is there anything else I can do?  Thanks. Any and all help is appreciated.

The Emerald would IMO be a good choice, but if it feels too heavy, I'd pass on it. Mixing weights is not good for timing and playing routine - even though it could be that, if the ball is drilled properly for your hand, it fits well? Best solution is to ask at a pro shop, or trust youir feeling about the weight. Just to not use the ball just because it is for free - better do it right from the start!

Weight hole is usually used to get a ball back into legal limits of static weight - most of the time, when the CG is placed outside of the grip center, towards the PAP. In some cases it is used to fine-tune a ball's reaction.
When a used ball is plugged up for a re-drill, the balance hole can be plugged, too, if the new setup calls for it. That's no problem and does not harm the ball's performance.
