Title: Hammer Vibe.. Really!?
Post by: phoenixheat on February 16, 2007, 03:39:48 AM
So this was my expression when my g/f bought me the ball for V-day... I've seen that the ball is good on dry lanes and I told my g/f that I'd like to have the ball as a nice back up to my Widow.  Well of course everyone knows the widow makes a huge mid lane move (for strokers) and is pretty uncontrollable on drier surfaces, So I decided to throw the Vibe for the first time and that thing went way right and then snapped back to the pocket like a ball I've never thrown before.  I just wanted to see what other people think of the Vibe and to see if anyone else has experience with it on lanes that are a little wetter?  I was hoping to have this ball as a 10 pin killer but it still breaks too much on the back end of the lane, anyone got any ideas on a decent spare ball?

The vibe can handle a few different volumes of oil, especically if the backends are clean and fresh. I've seen it thrown a 42' sport pattern and do well.

Hammer Tuff for spares.

Which Vibe did you get?  I've heard the blue is more skip snap and the purple has more of an arc reaction.

JM,

it's vice versa. Purple is skid/snap and the Blue arcs.

The Vibe does have a reactive pearl surface, so if there are significant dry patches for it to find friction down the lane, it can really snap.  Just because something is labeled a "dry lane" ball, doesn't preclude it from having significant hooking power.  What the Vibe will do is get through burnt heads MUCH MUCH better than your Widow.  Also, just get any plastic ball for spares, it's the only way to go.  Just watch the PBA, what do 80% of them throw, at least?  Plastic.  Get a Target Zone, or a Maxim or a Tuff, it doesn't matter so much, pick one that you like the looks of.  Look at the Spare Tire from Rotogrip, for instance, or some of the Vizaballs from Brunswick.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

I actually like having a reactive ball for a spare ball because I do throw a hooking spare ball and have a VERY hard time throwing the ball straight without rotation.  Believe it or not but my old setup (years ago) was the Brunswick Detonator as my heavy oil ball and the Reactive Ebonite 8 ball.  the combo worked amazing for house and tourney bowling.  ohh last night using the vibe as a spare ball on the first 2 games and then switching and using it as my first ball the last 2 games fairly nice.  I rolled 191 first game, 195 second game, then 211 and 229 to end the night.  overall the ball does skid and snap much harder than I'm used to, the blackwidow just plows through midlane oil.  I love the new vibe but the black widow will always be the one... ohh btw, my g/f bought it for me b/c she thought it was "pretty"  (blue ball)

Hi!

I throw a big blue spare as a spare ball...with rev like my first trhow and it's very good..still have a little hook but not enough to miss the 10 unless it's completely dry.

The spec are RG 2.65 diff 0.20 for a 16lb same as the tuff ;-)

tuff will do the work too.

So I used the Vibe on fresh oil today and it did exactly what I wanted/expected.  it had a bit of back end but went much straighter than the blackwidow.  i did a little experiment and threw at the 10 pin with both the BW and VIBE.. BW hooked too hard and missed, Vibe.. dead on the money.  no more 10 pin misses for me :-)

It's good that you made your 10 pin with it, but having a plastic ball is best in my opinion. On fried lanes, it'll be hard to control your ball despite taking out all of the revs.

yeah you are right.. the first night i used the ball the lanes were very dry and i used this for my first shot ball and it worked very nicely.  i think I'll pick up a plastic ball to throw as a spare on fried lanes.  I actually need to bake the BW soon too, anyone know how to do this properly? maybe 120 degrees in the oven and let it sit for a few hours?

Don't bake it just give it a hot water bath.  Best and safest way of getting the oil out of the ball.

AMF union Hills is where I usually go for late night cheap bowling... it just sucks because i can never get a decent lane.. the lanes are usually cooked by the time i get there and after all their leagues are done.  the widow usually rolls toow early and blows through the nose.. hense getting the vibe.  i talked to the guy there and he said they will be starting a sport league coming up this summer.. i just don't want to wait that long.. i want to get competitive again and have some fun.  you think any of the leagues will let me join late?

If you want to be competitive, deffinitly look into the ACBA or Strike Force Tour tournements. The SFT is hdcp with a new scratch div. and the ACBA is all scratch. Theres an ACBA event at Glenfair this weekend. There are also some tour guys and regional bowlers in the ACBA.

I also forgot about the draft leauge. I dont know too much about it but I think they alternate between 2 diff houses every week on Wed. nights. There is a meeting to talk about next season at Glenfair on the 28th @ 7pm

Yes they will, but only for 1 or 2 tourny's. The SFT doesnt require a name on the back. I wear a polo and Dockers shorts or pants. There is a place in the Arrowhead mall that will do your name on the back of a polo for about 10 or 15 bucks.

oh  nice... well i may just be there this weekend then.  the other bad part is i don't have an established average with a league so that'll be a ball of fun.  and I'm not even a member of the USBC (just got back into the sport)

You will need to get a USBC membership for both. I dont think you need an ave. for ACBA since its scratch. But keep in mind, the ACBA is about $125 and your bowling against some of the top bowlers in AZ including a few tour guys. If you've be out a while, this along with the conditions they put out can be overwelming

My Blue Vibe arrived today, right before I left the house to go bowling. I got to throw it on a couple lanes for about a game or two and so far I like it a lot. The reaction is a nice smooth arc. Something that is very controllable.

I also got to try out my Nighthawk, and well...they both react almost the same. I imagine the Nighthawk will handle a bit more oil, but when it comes to reaction shape it's very similar. I've found my benchmark ball and a nice step under it!

I got a vibe 2 months ago. This is my first Hammer. I like the ball, but what's next. I have only been bowling for six months in a league. Any advice? The house has a medium lane condition.

Try something from the Raw Hammer series, the Doom, Pain or Toxic.  The Pain is the overall strongest of the three, followed by the Toxic and the Doom.  All are GREAT balls, and won't break the bank.
