Heavy Oil Sport Shot

Hey guys,  I'm going to begin bowing a very heave and very long sport shot (46-48 ft) at the beginning of this summer.  I My current aresenal is a B/W, Doom (just ordered) and Vibe.  All of these balls work well for me but I'm afraid that none of them are going to be able to handle the pattern I'll be bowling on.  I need a heavy oil ball but don't know what I should look for.  I know the Hawg Wild and Hammer Pain are great balls but I also have been looking into the Circle Hard Core ball.  I need to know which ball will work well in heavy oil with very minimal backend friction.  any help would be appreciated.

Ok Hammer has some good equipment for long oil patterns.  When your bowling on a pattern 46' or 48' long, your break point is going to be around the 15 board.  So your not going to need to cover a lot of boards.  

Here's my list for that pattern.

NO MERCY
PAIN
HAWGZILLA

I feel these 3 can do the job fine.  I have not owned a HZ but have seen it rolled.  It has a pretty strong cover for heavier amounts of oil and should work well on long patterns.

The NM has a very strong mid-lane and back end reaction.  It's cover is very strong and can handle heavy oil with ease.  The NO MERCY comes with a 4000 grit abralon finish.  At 4000 grit it can handle a good amount of oil.  So if more grab is needed you have many steps down in grit to get that perfect reaction.  Plus the NO MERCY'S hit and carry is un-real!

The PAIN has a very strong mid-lane read and is smooth on the back end.  The PAINS cover is not as strong as the NO MERCY'S but can handle heavy oil if dulled.  I have 2 PAINS and have used them on long heavy oiled patterns.  I had one dulled to 500 grit and the other was 360 grit.  The PAIN is a great bowling ball for tough lane conditions.

Think I can get away with altering the BW surface to a lower grit and use that for the long/heavy oil?

I wouldn't drill anything new for a pattern like that.  Just aim the ball off the corner any ball will do.

So just take a straighter approach?  like throw the ball straight up the second arrow hooking into pocket?

I agree here, but if you want to buy another ball for this condition, I wouldn't reccomend anything reactive. I bowl in the soup all the time and you are gonna want something in a solid particle for a very long flooded shot.

Some possibilities:

Visionary AMB Particle
Brunswick Mammoth

No no..when you get out for practice, try a 2nd arrow shot and see what happens

I tried this on a 50 ft pattern and wow did I suck.

The best results I had was when I was standing at about 10 with my feet and angling the ball over 15 right at the pocket with slow speed...just coming out of the ball in a handshake motion.

If you want to play a hook, you're going to have to stand more towards 22 or so and play straight up 15-17.  The ball is not going to hook much, no matter what ball you use.

I guess this could all depend on the volume of oil they use too.  All I know is the first time I played this, I finished 2nd to last, 2nd time I was better by 200 pins.

last time I played that shot I used my no mercy,stood on top of the five board and pointed it with a soft hand.I ended up shooting a 279 game,my no mercy was throwing pins like crazy!I got a little high in the pocket in the sixth frame and left a 4 pin.

Actually I was thinking about looking at the Mammoth.. it's relatively cheap and sounds like a good heavy oilier.  I usually stand about midlane and throw the ball out towards the channel to get into friction and have the balls breakpoint start a little earlier so it makes a strong move towards the pocket.  I throw with average speed with slightly above average revs.  The black widow makes it back to pocket with a STRONG move off the break point... I'm looking for something smoother and able to handle the heavy oil.  The nice thing is that I've made friends with the Alley Owner and he has agreed to let me come in and throw on a sport pattern  during open bowling so I can get some practice.  (never thrown on a sport pattern before)... this'll be interesting.

sounds good.. I usually shoot an 85% spare so I'm pretty confident about that (I've had way too much practice with spares)  so now i'm just looking to strike.  Someone actually recomended the Brunswick Fury but I read the reviews and seems people are leaving 10's left and right... any thoughts?

If the condition is really heavy oil and not just a long pattern then pointing the ball is your best approach.  If it's just a long pattern but the oil is light then you should be able to hook the ball without problems.

This ball is a beast. I have not thrown it, but I have drilled several and each person cannot believe the movement that it offers up in oil.
