Help with my experiment.
« on: February 23, 2006, 01:00:42 AM »
I have a Doom as many know.  I also am picking up another one tomorrow.  I'm drilling the new the exact same as the Doom I have now.  The Doom I have now i'm going to dull it.

This is the experiment I was talking about before.  Well I'm going to do it soon.  I want to see how much oil the dull Doom can handle compared to the Polished box surface one.  The Doom in box condition can handle med oil down to light oil. I want to see if a dull Doom can handle med/heavy.  I think it will.

Now my question.  Since the Doom has abralon finish do I dull it down with abralon pads or can I just use scotchbrite?  Does it make a difference?  If I need to get abralon pads where can I buy them without having to order them?

It does not matter that you use on the ball, what matters is what grit you want the surface. If you just want to take the shine off the ball, i would say that you use a high grit sandpaper, adn then use the Abralon pads to bring back up to box grit. If you want to take the surface down, just use a grey scotch brite pad, or 800 grit sandpaper.

I have a ball spinner.  I also have many scotch brite pads.  Green, grey and blue.  I just never used abralon pads and was wondering because that is what Hammer uses on all of it's covers.

I will just dull it with the scotch brite.  This is the experiment and I want to dull one of them not just take the shine off.

Thanks for the reply's.  I will let you know how it works for me.

You can buy abralon pads here - for less than 1/2 of the price that Ebonite sells them for.  The pads are made by Mirka.

I would use the abralon pads because of the range of grits available and thier ease of use.

Let us know what happens.

Personally, I use the A/Pads 90 percent of the time. That said, I've also used S/B pads on Ebonite balls and to be honest I could not tell a difference. I will say I like the A/Pads better, holds to my CAB and clean up is a snap, I also think they last longer if taken care of, JMO.

I got my new Doom today.  I will be dulling down my first one.  Both balls have the same layout.  So I will get a good test at how much a cover change on this ball will have on the reaction.

I plan on buying a case of 4 Dooms before they get discontinued.  If anyone out there that is reading this post reply buy one of these balls.  Awesome flip reaction and hits flat out hard.  Great ball period!
