Here is an interesting story...
I took my Black Widow (lightly polished) with me to Reno for the USBC and in the team event I could not get the ball to wrinkle. It worked pretty good at the Bowlers Journal but nothing at the stadium.
So, I decide to get it dulled up a bit for singles/doubles and take it to the Hammer Booth. I tell the guy what was happening in team event and say I would like it dulled to 1000, maybe 800. He tells me that he will be glad to do it but it won't make any difference on the USBC pattern. He says that dulling the ball won't give it much more traction, he says, "If you don't have the hand to make it move, it won't move." I thank him for his advice and ask him to dull it anyway. He does with a bit of attitude.
I go for my singles/doubles squad and my dulled ball is suddenly giving me a better reaction than I had all weekend. Now, before anyone gets excited, I know that in Singles/doubles the teams in front have broken them down some, thus assisting in my reaction. But, I am 100% convinced that I would not have had as good a shot with the ball in its forementioned state as dulled up.
Plus, I have always heard from any number of sources that a high % of ball reaction is directly related to the cover. So, I was a bit put off by the "bad" advice I received at the Hammer booth.
