Drilling for Black Widow?
« on: January 02, 2007, 04:36:39 AM »
I had a black widow drilled with the #1 drilling for a skid/flip reaction.  What I ended up with was a hook and set reaction.  I gave the ball to my son (he has more speed and more hand) and he got a great skid flip reaaction.  Thus, the drill sheet was correct.  It just didn't match up to my speed and hand.

So, I have been kicking around the idea of getting another one and drilling this one with the 4" pin to PAP (pin just right of the ring) and placing the mass bias just under the thumb.

My question is:  has anyone tried this layout with the Black Widow?  If so, what kind of reaction did you get out of it?  Any other info would be appreciated.

Scott

My PAP is 4 1 /2 over and 1/2 up.  I just drilled a balck widow with a 3 x 3 1/4 drill with mb 3 1/2 from PaP.  Weight hole is 1 1/2 inches deep 1/2 inch below Pap/  Reaction is a smooth as silk not too jumpy even on a fresh 38 foot house condition

Scott, where is the pin placed on the BW that you didn't like?

Scott, where is the pin placed on the BW that you didn't like?

The pin was above the ring with the mass bias in the strong position.  I tried changing the surface on it and several other things but all I got was a hook/set motion and flat 10's all day.  Far different story for my son with the same drilling.

That's why I thought about wanting to move the mass bias under the thumb to help it store some energy but still have a good move on the back end.

I have two BWs:

- BW 1: 3" pin placed next to ring and MB 1" right of thumb
- BW 2: 4" pin placed above ring and MB almost 2" right of thumb.

BW 1 goes long, then a smooth and wicked arc to the pocket.
BW 2 is earlier stronger, and definately flippier.

If you want smooth, place the pin even with the ring. You'll be happy!
