Infection...disapointed...
« on: February 10, 2011, 02:35:19 PM »
I have to be honest I'm just not impressed with this ball so far.  I thought it looked like a great piece to fit between my 5 x 5 pin up Taboo and my 5.5 60* pin up Victory Road.  I drilled it 5 x 4.5 pin down and left the box finish on it.  It just seems lazy through the midlane, and then completely hook/stops if it gets to friction.

Am I the only one that really isn't impressed with this core/cover combo?  I mean the ball LOOKS so cool...but it rolls like a turd.

May depend on the condition and the surface.

I hated my original Jigsaw till I added some polish. The ball became one of the most aggressive hardest hitting bowling balls I've ever thrown. Seriously, I never had a ball that hit as hard and carried as much as it. My brother had the same problem at first with his.

The few Infections I've seen (that sounds funny) are duller then I thought they would be for OOB.  I could easily see adding a little polish to the box finish to get a little more constant skid snap finish.

I tried it again last night on a little more oil after leagues got done and still didn't like what I saw.  I'm going to play with the surface and see if it helps at all.  I am doubting it as it's so far from any shape I like to see or what I expected that this will probably find the for sale/trade section by the weekend.

It's just hypersensitive to oil...it horribly under reads the oil and goes sideways if it touches any friction.  I just can't come up with a lane condition that I think this would work on more effectively than anything else I have.

Cover stock surface dictates length and flare separation dictates how quickly it will respond to friction or transition.

Check the flare separation, if the flares are too tight it will be sensitive to the oil and too responsive to friction. You may need to adjust surface as it is a fairly aggressive cover.

How does it compare with your Victory Road, Russell?  Your description sounds like it's for that ball instead :) ... I haven't seen an Infection thrown yet, but I've seen multiple Victory Roads.

I just drilled one of these up and got to throw it tonight.

Ball specs....
Pre-drill
Gross wt: 15-4
Top Wt: 2-3/4 oz
Pin: 2-3"

Layout: 60 x 5-1/4 x 75 , no hole yet.

Post drill:
Gross wt: 15-1
Side: 3/8 oz pos
Thumb: 3/4 oz
Top: 3/4 oz

Surface.....OOB

This gives me a pin under bridge with mass bias strong, cg kicked out of line to the left about 3/4".

What I am seeing is a very strong roll in the midlane and a strong yet controlled breakpoint. The Infection seems to respond very well to hand position and rev rate changes. Our house shot is a bit heavier than most and does not have the huge wall as seen in a lot of centers.

The Infection is playable on this shot for me, even in the 3rd game. My Taboo was not usable on this condition...it was an over/under nightmare for me. I can report more as I learn the ball more.

I've thrown it a bit more, and to be honest am still less than impressed.  The house I am in does use a lighter volume than most, and the only thing I can think is that this ball would work well on a longer pattern.  The reason I'm still so pessimistic is I have  Taboo drilled 5 x 5 with the pin just above my fingers and I have no issue getting it to continue, and the Infection just stops no matter what.

The motion it gives me reminds me of that when I throw my Pure Physics on a volume that's too light....but this ball won't handle heavier volumes like the Physics will...

Ric my flare rings are a little tight, but nothing out of the ordinary.  I've got a P3 hole in it now that isn't very big or deep.  I'm going to try and drill the ring deeper so I can take the weight hole deeper and try to add some flare.

I tried a lot of Ebonite/Hammer/Columbia/Track equipment the other week at an Ebonite demo day, and the Infection was one of the balls that impressed me the most. (My dad ended up drilling one for himself that day even!). On a broken down pattern, it let me move left to chase the head oil, but still get a ton of recovery downlane. On that same condition the Taboo I tried labored off the spot and never really made much of a move. The Infection made a very, very pronounced move off the friction, but it wasn't uncontrollable or anything. Both balls were at OOB finish with the #1 layout (pin over bridge, MB kicked a couple inches, so for me that's like a 5.5x4 kind of layout).

Im loving my infection. I shot a 280 and a 300 with it sunday because of the move it makes off of the friction i can play anywhere on the lane. It has a lot of forgivness and a lot of recovery, more than most balls ive thrown. It really reminds me of my original black widow just a little stronger.

Russell,

Unless you have ALOT of axis rotation, the pin down is what is hurting you.  Have someone on my team on Tuesday Night (a condition you are quite familiar with) who has a pin down ball and unless they get around the ball quite a bit, the ball lays off on the backend.  You may also see what I see with stronger equipment.  When I take a stronger piece and drill it on the weaker side, the ball hook stops on me as well, even with the pin up.  The idea, for me anyway, is drill the ball with the pin at 4 1/2 and do a 40-50 degree MB.  If I dont get the ball flaring, I lose continuation on the backend.

Pin down on a lighter pattern is probably going to hook/stop on you, which is why your pin up balls are way better fit for what you are bowling on.  My suggestion, is to take the cover, polish it, and make the weight hole bigger.  The Infection is a pretty strong ball.  What happens when you adjust your hand positions?

Thanks for the offer...it's 16lbs and I don't have a use for a 2.0 anyways.

Thanks
