Looking to Build an Arsenal around my BW
« on: August 07, 2007, 08:32:00 AM »
Okay to start I am a lefty.  I play primarily straight, with a small swing.  I track high, but I have no idea what my PAP is.  Here is a pic of my Black Widow drilling:

I would like to build an arsenal around that.  I have a Hammer High Rev on the way, a Big Shot, that I don't really like, and a Super Beast that has seen better days.

Where should I start?

How does your BW roll now? It must be pretty tame since the Mass Bias is under your thumb. Looks like your pro shop driller tried to lay it out stack for you.

I would make your High Rev your benchmark ball. A ball you can pull first out of your bag to test how the lanes are then determine which ball to use. Something under your High Rev would be a Blue Vibe or Cherry Vibe for med to light oil lanes. Maybe get an Anger for Heavy Oil.

The Widow is super smooth.  Very control friendly and that is why I love it so much.  The problem is...as with any ball, the lane conditions do not always allow me to use it  Or I wouldn't use any other ball.

I know I need something for a lighter situation..and some reverse block patterns.  The two balls I had used and done well with were a Tropical Storm and a Super Beast.

I would decide how big of an arsenal you would like to have.  I personally feel that a 4 strike ball arsenal is perfect for most competitive NON PBA bowlers.

I would choose a duller surface ball for heavy/long patterns, a shiny surface ball for light/shorter patterns and 2 balls in between.  I feel this should cover most conditions.

I would go with something along these lines.

Anger (dull)
BW
BWP, Doom, Toxic (pick one)
Vibe
Spare

I'm almost thinking this ball could be in the place of the Doom/Toxic/BW Pearl although I think the Big Shot is a tad stronger than the Doom, which is probably the ball I would choose from that list.

OK... you could use the BW as the first ball out of your bag. Depending on the amount of oil you hit, you can leave it at the factory 4000 grit surface, or, if you hit a bit more oil, you can keep at at 2000 grit.

Next, you need a ball a little weaker than the BW. I think the Big Shot can do that job. The layout is a little weaker, and it's a pearl. It should work in that condition.

You then need a pair of balls for the extremes... one for the heavy floods, which I'd keep dull at 800 grit or so. Use the same layout as the BW.

Then, a ball for the extreme dry. I'd use a label leverage layout (CG in palm, pin in 1:30 outside ring, no x-hole). A medium pearl would be good for you.

Good luck!

I would say pick up a Anger, a Black Widow Pearl or Sling Blade, a Vibe, and then a spare ball.
