Love/Hate and the No Mercy
« on: August 16, 2007, 05:29:08 AM »
Hey,

I have talked to a fair number of people about the NM and 1/2 love it and 1/2 hate it I was wondering if anybody could explain why (How the different drillings affect it and how it reacts for strokers / tweeners / crankers).  Some people say it hooks a ton and some say it is a 150 dollar spare ball.  Any help in understanding this would be nice, thanks for reading.

I'm a tweener, 15mph medium revs.  When I first got this ball it was a beast.  Hooked a lot and came back when I got it to the dry anytime.

Here's the issue, the cover on mine is dead after 80-100 games.  I've rejuvenated it, I've re-surfaced it, hot bathed it, the whole nine yards.  I still can't get the same reaction I had out of box.  It still hooks, but it's at least 5-6 boards less than when I first got it.

It's the first ball I've had that OOb was AWESOME, and later is not so great.

I would guess it's due to drillers not understanding the "special" requirements for laying out that ball.  It's different from other balls with a marked "MB", and I'd imagine some look at the drill sheet, think "Huh, I've been laying out asyms for 15 years, I think I know what I'm doing here."  If they bother to look at a drill sheet anymore.  When the customer asks for a strong layout, they swing the HART out like they would any other MB and end up with the true MB well on the other side of the track.

Two reasons -

1 - The coverstock is very high maintenance becuase of the high oil absorption rate,  so you have to take the oil out of the ball frequently in order to preserve performance.  Personally, this is one of those balls that I'd use clean and dull on after every session in order to slow down the effect.  The other factor is that since the coverstock is very strong, it'll roll good out of the box but when the bowler burns a track in it, it's burning energy earlier and not turning as hard on the back as a result.  One way to minimize this is to hit it with a 4000 abralon pad once or twice a month, depending on the condition of the lane surface you're bowling on.

2 - The core design of this ball is such that it needs negative side weight in order to work properly.  The HART is supposed to be in your ball track and traditional MB drills make this ball roll like an expensive White Dot.  If you're friendly pro shop operator doesn't know this and puts a traditional MB drill on it, you just bought a $240 spare ball.

I haven't actually thrown a No Mercy, but I'm good friends with one of the local pro shop operators here and that's how it was explained to me.

I know two bowlers that hated the NM.  After looking at their pin placement I could understand why.  Their NM's were drilled way too strong!  For this particular ball, placing the pin any closer than 4.5" from the bowlers pap is not going to give them the desired reaction there looking for.  The ball will flare a lot and early which will give less reaction on the backend.

A lot of driller don't measure a bowlers pap which is a big mistake when drilling a ball like this.  Everyone I know that had their pin placed at least 4.5" from their pap loved this ball.

I really like the NM.  I think it's an awesome bowling ball.  However the coverstock is high maintenance.  On each one of my NM's the reaction was great until the ball had about 200 games on it.  Once it hit close to the 200 game mark the reaction was noticeably less.  No bowling ball will keep that OOB reaction forever.  Every bowling balls reaction changes with use.  The NM just did this quicker than other bowling balls i've used.
