Mini Review: No Mercy
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:42:55 AM »
Ball: Pin 5 inches from PAP located just under the ring finger. Heart is on my 2nd flare ring. I have the surface at 4000 abralon

Lane Conditions: several. I have used it on my house shot...which is 36ft buffed to 44ft with a taper from the middle to the gutter. I have also used it on the Chameleon and the Viper.

Hook:
Heavy Oil: I can see the No Mercy working on heavy oil but not at 4000. I did have it at 2000 and it gave a good look on the med/heavy stuff. This ball is a tweener, it is not quite a heavy oil ball and it is not quite a medium oil ball.

Medium: On the shots where you can give the ball some room it will circle back from most places. Just beware of leaking it outside too early.....DOA.

Light: The coverstock is versatile enough that with the proper layout I think it could work here. I would advise against it though.

TOTAL HOOK: It is more the Raw Pain, particularly in the backend. As far as what the No Mercy will give you it all depends on surface prep.

CONTROL:
The breakpoint can be so abrupt that I do not know if I would use this ball as a benchmark ball. The layout I have listed is the 2nd attempt with this ball. The first attempt was pin next to ring finger(3 3/4 from PAP) and it was a great control type ball.

EXPECTED REACTION:
When I first got it I expected much more movement down lane than I was getting, thus the plug and redrill. With the second layout this ball just simply came to life. Hit has movment down lane with a solid read in the mids.

Strengths:
It is not very often that you have a solid reactive give the type of backend reaction that the NO MERCY does. With that said...you get the backend but it is so consistant in it reaction and it is very forgiveable when you miss your spot.

Weaknesses:
Stay away from the dry. This ball is not meant for that. Another issue this ball has is carrydown. NORMALLY the best solution to carrydown for me is to try to get around it, in doing so the no mercy was getting too far right too quickly.

Comments:
The No Mercy is a very good release from Hammer. Be watchful of the layout you choose. The #1 layout is not the answer for everyone and I feel that this ball has gotten a bad rap from so many guys drilling it that way when they should still be drilling based on the bowler's PAP.

Great mini review Carl.

I really feel Hammer should have stressed placing the pin based on bowlers PAP's, rather than using the picture in the drill sheet.  This ball just goes to show how important it is to drill a ball based on a bowlers pap.

I have had great success with all 3 of my NM's.  Each has the pin from 5" to 5.5" from my PAP.

I agree Carl, good review!!!

Chitown,
All of the drill specs which are found on Hammerbowling.com.  With that being said, I believe Hammer has done quite a bit to help with layouts, the responsibility falls on the ball drillers to take the time and find the bowlers PAP.

Chris, your right in that the pro shops should always measure a bowlers pap.  It is there responsibility to do this.

I think it should also be noted to both pro shop operators and the person purchasing the ball.....there are far more layout options available than what is in the drilling sheet. I firmly believe those are starting points.
