My New BW Sting!
« on: May 01, 2010, 02:07:08 PM »
--Update--
I''ve got my demo vid up on youtube so here''s the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkJ4cWnRRok

Hey guys, last week I came here to ask about the Black Widow Sting and the Venom, and pretty much everyone suggested the Sting so I went ahead and ordered one, it arrived yesterday.

I didn''''t get to really test the ball yet. For the past many months I had been bowling with Storm''''s products, which are great, but they leave me a record-high number of corner pins, ghost/solid pins, and splits, no matter how hard/soft or the angularity of my pocket shots are.

Last night I bowled in my 2nd shift league -- lanes were downright destroyed. I used Storm''''s Virtual Energy for the first 2 games, no matter how consistent I was at hitting the pocket, all 10 pins would NOT go down, but leaving 10s, 7s and splits, giving me scores in the 170s and 190s, so I pulled out the Sting for the first time at the beginning of the 3rd game, I never used it so I spent the first 5 frames to find the proper mark to use on these broken down lanes, and as soon as I found it, every pocket shot was an inevitable strike, finished the game with a nice 5 in a row and scoring in the 210s right off the bat. This ball is a hooking beast!

So I must''''ve picked the right ball, even though it only has 1 game on it LoL, I will practice with it tomorrow when the lanes are fresh and see how well it will really work and update on here tomorrow or Monday. I''''ll probably do a bit of video recording and post on here as well just for the heck of it.

Just a side note, I think Storm''''s Virtual Energy and Rapid Fire Pearl would make great "sandbagging" equipment for me in my upcoming leagues LoL Don''''t get me wrong, I''''m not bashing on Storm''''s stuff, it''''s just a single company isn''''t for everyone -- and Storm probably isn''''t for me, maybe Hammer is?

I think I''''ll play a me-vs-me game tomorrow! Me using the Sting vs Me using one of Storm''''s balls... haha. I''''ll have no life tomorrow after 3pm

UDPATE------------------------------------------------------------------

Got to test out the Sting today. Bowled 5 games with the Sting and 1 game with the Virtual Energy for the me-vs-me match. The VE instantly started leaving me solid 7s, splits, and 10s (AGAIN!) so I suppose Storm''''s not right for me.

As for the Sting, for all 5 games I left only two 10 pins, and 2 ghost pins, other than that, solid shots as it should''''ve been all season which gave me a good 219 average for today''''s bowling. Only downfall about this ball is it is NOT very forgiving if I miss my mark. But that''''s only a problem for inconsistent bowlers, right? LoL

And I suppose I was everyone''''s entertainment at the center today for the me-vs-me match. Even though I was wearing my headphones and listening to music as I bowled, I had the music off for the match and I could hear people talking behind me about betting on the Virtual Energy and the Sting, haha. Results:
BW Sting - 223
Virtual Energy - 192

I know you're excited about your success, but just temper it a bit and give the STING a while. It will do exactly what your others have done, soak up some lane oil and slow down a bit.

It is common knowledge, or at least common opinion, that a fresh ball with fresh cover ALWAYS seems to carry better than an older ball with oil in the cover.

Make sure you get some good cleaner and keep the surface cleaned and prepped right. It still won't last forever, but it will last much longer.

And keep up the good work. Trying out a new ball can be hard at times, and 210 right off the bat ain't bad.

Oh I know. I'm practicing the habit of wiping the ball every couple of frames, and hopefully clean it each day of using it. I hear this ball sucks up oil FAST, but it only makes sense because it's a dull, soft coverstock.

Well hey I only used it for one game on some tough conditions that makes it hard to shoot a decent 200 game (the highest scratch of the season is 258 and 257, mine being 249). I'm aware a brand new ball doesn't kick in until I've bowled at least a few (5 to 10) games with it

I will say this as I have this ball in my arsenal.  I've never been a huge basher of Ebonite/Hammer, in fact I LOVE their products.....but the Sting DID die on me after 35 games or so.  To see if it were me or the ball we put it in the revivor oven in the shop and the ball sprang back to life!  Fresh resurface put on it and the ball is money....but it is slowing down again after i've put 30 games on it again.....we'll see how we go from here.  VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE ball.  For me though, this ball works better as a medium-medium heavy oil ball (not a true oiler) with some surface......to each their own.

Wow died after 35 games? The last time I bowled with the Sting I wiped it every couple of frames. So hopefully that'll keep it well maintained. Maybe wiping it every frame, and cleaning it every few games will help better? I'd hate to have to change balls if doing all this work and the ball still dies out before 50 games. Wiping it every frame is already burning me out LoL

I hate to break it to you, but you can pretty much count on it dying on you after about 50 games. Sorry, but thats kinda been trend with that line of equipment.

Simply cleaning is not enough? You must bring back the R/A.
Roughness Average. This must be done around every 30 to 40 games.
More often if bowling on wood lanes.

+1 Wear and tear on these porous coverstocks alters the grit levels after a certain amount of games and depending on the conditons of the lanes being bowled on to as low as 600 grit. They need to be taken back to the grit levels that provided optimal performance after so many games. This seems to be a step left out alot by those who complain of permanent reaction loss even after oil extraction.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Well let's see, by now I must have about 25 games on the sting, and I've been sticking with the idea of wiping it every frame or 2 as much as I could. My ball appears to be starting to hook even more than before. Is this one of those moments when the ball reaches its fullest potential just before it completely dies out? LoL Anyone ever experienced this?

Wiping the ball after every shot with a towel and cleaning the ball after every set is a great start. There are a lot of people I see who clean their equipment before they start bowling but that is a bad idea. That does basically nothing as the oil has had time to seep deeper into the cover at that point.

If you want to insure the life of your ball, you need to wipe it between frames, clean after each set, and give it a good bath about every 50 games. After the bath you would be wise to touch up the surface (for the Black Widow Sting this would be with 2000 grit). Doing a full resurface is a good idea as well, your pro shop could do this for a fee (probably $20-$30) if you don''t want to do it yourself. Extending the life of a great ball is a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

I still have the original Black Widow and it still works great. You just have to take care of your equipment, and that means maintaining the surface (which a lot of people don''t do and then cry that their ball died). Good luck to you with your new ball.

Well if the Sting DOES happen to die out no matter how much I clean it and suddenly stops working anytime soon, then I'll most likely be aiming for the Jigsaw Corner. I hear good things. I watched a guy bowl next to me using the corner, he doesn't throw fast, but those messengers he got every so often looked like the type you'd get from a power bowler.

No joke! I see people cleaning their equipment before bowling too, it doesn't really do anything except wipe off dust and particles from inside your bag.

I recently (about 2 weeks ago) bathed my Rapid Fire Pearl cuz it was picking up alot of oil. I have yet to try it out on the lanes but I been using the Sting as its replacement LoL I want to see how the bathing method works.

Your signature cracks me up. It's so true too! Pro's make mistakes on TV all the time and the telecasts cover it up with "adjustments" or "test drive" haha

Pete Weber misses his mark by 10 boards and hits a brooklyn strike.
Cast: Did that adjustment do what you wanted it to?
Pete: Yeah. I was testing a new line to see if I could get a brooklyn strike. And it worked, but I don't think I'm gonna use it again...
