Title: need a very light oil ball!!!
Post by: dogmotta on October 16, 2007, 08:52:20 AM
current lineup: no mercy, bwp, and cherry vibe. No matter what release i use and how deep i play the ball still hooks either through the beak or goes completely brooklyn. I need help!!!! any suggestions would be helpful.

I don't think Hammer has anything below the CV in their lineup right now.  You could try to find one of the Pure Hammers, I'd go for the black one since it's urethane instead of reactive.

If that doesn't work, one of the other urethanes that are available right now might work for you.  Try to find a Slate Blue Gargoyle, that's probably the best of the bunch right now, one of the few with a real dynamic core.

If you don't want to do that, you could try adjusting the surface on your CV.  What is the box finish besides "polished"?  You could try one of the extended length polishes like the Legends EL polish or Track/Powerhouse Delayed Reaction (is there a PH version?).  Or another CV with a weaker layout.

I think the Slate Blue would do wonders.  It has the same look and finish as the old Pearl Urethane Hammers and Turbos, but with a little more backend and hitting power.

How about using a tame layout?

Hammer really doesn't have one but you could get a Tornado from Ebonite.

Visionarys Slate Blue Gargoyle is hands down the best dry lane ball out there. It's very smooth and yet because of its core can give you a very nice flip in the backend without overreacting.

The black Pure Hammer would be a good choice, even though it is pretty strong and moves a lot, needs some head oil.

The SBG would be my favorite, and some should still be available.

If you want a reactive piece, the Power Groove Dry/R is also a good choice, and most other entry level balls with a weak drilling can do the trick, too.

I've been looking for such a ball too. It's sad that almost all the good balls for this condition have been discontinued. Definately no currant Hammer balls will work. I am looking into Roto-Grip Neptune and Brunswick Groove Dry/R as well as regular Power Groove Reactive. I actually still have a half dead lightweight Power Groove as a spare ball. It used to be OK on dry lanes( drilled weak).
Just wish they made something with a very weak coverstock but a hard hitting, strong core........maybe it's easier to find an alley that would put oil on the lanes, lol!

I agree with a tamer drilling pattern. Try the 135 degree drilling. You will need dry boards for the ball to react. From my experience it gives me atleast 5 boards more left than anyone of my dry lane balls in the past.

i would go with a purple vibe. you shoud still be able to find one. drill something close to axis so it will roll and not over react off the dry and not be a skid flip machine.

Hammer does not really have a true dry lane (by that I mean burnt out heads and squirty backends).  I bought a Blue Vibe to try to use, but it is almost as strong as my BWP.  I figure I will do a Cherry Vibe soon, and put the pin very far negative (6"-6 1/2") Pin to PAP layout to see if I can get that to work better.  Whatever you do, do not go for a Blue Vibe, as the CT Reactive coverstock is really a strong cover (used on the Hawg Wild, a High Performance Ball).

My Cherry Vibe is really close to my BWP....

If your bowling on scorched lanes then a urethane ball is what's needed.  I think buddies proshop has urethane balls for sale.  I think there remakes of the black angle.

have you ever tried a reverse layout it will go alot farther down the lane and it will weaken the reaction on the ball.

I have a roto grip Neptune with the pin one inch from my axis and it is an excellent ball for toasted lanes.  I keep Track delayed reaction on it.  The layout is super smooth and easy to control.

My blue and cherry vibe are not dry lane balls.  They are close to my widow.

I have a 14lb Pink Hammer up for sale on eBay right now:

its probably going to be one of the mildest reacting balls (outside of plastic) that you will find.

IMO if you need a true dry lane ball, do not get a reactive ball. Go with a urethane. I have have 16lb NIB Scout Hi-Flare Urethane FS if your interested PM me. Hi flare core with durable urethane cover that can be sanded or polished.
