Poll: Hammer No Mercy - Have u tried it Polished?
« on: May 18, 2007, 04:30:16 AM »
Hey All,

The subject title says it all.

Have you tried this ball polished? If so, what surface grit did you have underneath it. I know all of you may have different drill patterns, but Mine is Pattern #6 (Pin about 1/2" over bridge and MB about 1/2" left of thumb.

Ball already gets good length with that layout and with a 2000 grit abralon finish.

So have you tried your No Mercy with Polish on it and if so, what type of Polish did you use? What was the result?

Thanks in advance!

I had mine with the #1 layout and used it at 4000, 2000, and 2000 polished. The polish worked very good for my house shot. It gave it a good deal more lentgh with a snappier backend. It would let me move right a few boards and find a great look.

bluerrpilot,

Thanks for the reply man. I might try slapping some Ebonite Factory Polish on top of the 2000 grit abralon surface and see what happens.

Thanks!

A bowler in my town has a No Mercy polished, he had it layed out pin in his first track ring and pin 4" from axis.
He polished it as it was way too strong for him on our pretty pure medium house shot. After he polished it he was able to use it easier, it was still strong at 2000 + Bruns Factory Finish high gloss but it was usable. It snapped as hard as my black widow does at the end and had a very similar reaction to a black widow on mediums.

For the record I use the Black Magic polish.

Ram, my #6 layout NM has the cover at 4000 grit abralon and delayed reaction polish on it.  For me this gave it a lot more length and was able to use it on some lighter oil patterns.  The delayed reaction polish tames down the back end a little bit but gives a nice arc reaction that's pretty controllable.

I like the reaction with this polish.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I've decided that I'm going to experiment and apply some Ebonite Factory Polish on top of the 2000 abralon grit prep it is currently at. I will let you guys know how the ball reacts after some practicing tonight.

Thanks!

The RESULTS:

So last night I applied Ebonite Factory Polish over the 2000 abralon surface. Ball looks beautiful shined up. Took it out on the lanes on a Second shift medium oiled house shot. Lanes were a bit choppy with a bit of hang outside of 5.

Ball had more length and still had a predictable arc. This ball didn't snap at all. Still very predictable, but just added more length. If I kept the ball in this polished state, it would probably do well on a broken down House Shot.

So that's my story!
Hope this helps...

Thanks for reading,
Ram

Sorry for the hijack:

Chitown, What is drilling #6?  I only see four plus a fifth for a full roller.  Anyway, why would you take such a high performance ball, then almost kill it by polishing it and add a slipping agent?  Couldn't you have started with a weaker (and cheaper) ball and accomplished the same thing easier?  I guess as long as it works is all that matters.  I'm just trying to figure out your decision process.  Thanks.

Ram,

I tried my No Mercy polished, unpolished, and at 600 all the way up to 4000 grit.
Didn't work for me...Chitown thought it was drilled pin to close to PAP (under 4"). I used the suggested drilling #1...Chi thought #6 would have worked for me.

I use Beans Sauce on most my equipment that I want to use polish on...Good stuff!

i have done 800 grit abralon with the storm step 3 polish the 1500 to 2500 shine and hook it after that for tackiness and ball rolls fabulous

Strider the #6 layout is on the drill sheet.  It's the aggressive layout for high rev bowlers.  It shows a picture of the PIN above and in between the fingers with the HART left of the thumb.  The description says to place the pin 5" to 5.5" from my PAP and the HART into the ball track.

I wouldn't normally put a slip agent polish on a heavier oil/ strong type of ball.  My thoughts were to experiment since I have 3 NM's.  What I found was the slip agent polish doesn't kill the reaction at all.  It does tame it down a bit on the back end.  It also give it more length.  Even with the polish this ball needs some head oil or you loose carry power.

Strider i'm one to experiment with many different things.  A couple years ago I was experimenting with taken the polish off pearlized bowling balls.  Many back then told me it was a dumb thing to do.  I found that it gave me a great reaction.
