Got my widow today...
« on: October 21, 2006, 02:24:05 PM »
Thanks to all of you guys with the positive posts about this ball, I finally took the plunge. This is my first Hammer ball and she's a beauty.

Was wondering if the majority of you are pretty much using it in box condition or did you take it down a bit?

I took mine too 500 grit. Mostly because I use it as my heavy oil ball. It dosent have the same absurd flip off the dry(witch I dont dont like too much) and is one of the smoothest most powerfull rolls I've ever seen or experenced. I would reccomend it, all though if its not really wet, you better be able to move right(lefty) ALOT or be able to flatten the wrist and just roll it really smooth and easy. I really like the ball at 500 though, it rolls up amazing in the oil, witch I need, as I dont like to play off the dry, I prefer to play in, keep it in the oil, that way, if there is dry outside, it's like a safety, I can push a bit with no problem recovering

I took my widow down to 600 with wetsand paper.I have'nt tried it yet but before it would go to long and flip real hard but be inconsistant on one pattern I shoot on and on long oil it had no backend.speed and release changes did not affect the reaction too much, thats good and bad.I think oob the widow would be great for wood lanes as it has so much length and backend but on synthetics just the hint of carrydown and the ball became eratic.I feel this is more the core/drilling choice than the cover prep but I hope the 600 grit cover helps as I love the way the ball hits.

I have my first BW in box condition.  I just drilled my second today with a more agressive drilling.  I'm waiting to see if I will need to take it down some, but I can only see myself taking it down to 2000...1000 if I really have to.

Well, I got to try it for 4 games of open bowling this morning. Seemed to be able to use it anywhere from inside third (around 18) which is deep for me and tried it out to down the pipe at 6/7, but the carry was spotty overall. Left a lot of 10 pins, a couple of 9's and 4 solid 8 pins. Seemed a bit speed sensitive so I'm hoping that once I get a couple of games on it and break it in so to speak, it'll be a little more consistent. I threw my One for comparison and it seemed a couple of boards stronger. Overall, I guess the jury is still out. I'll try it for a couple of league sessions and if it's still so speed sensitive, I might take it down to 2000.....

Your first impression of the ball sounds similar to a freind's of mine...

...I took the grit down to 2000 and it has become a whole lot more usefull / predictable for him.

This ball definately has a break-in period.  I was not thrilled with mine initially, but after 10-12 games or so it became a different ball.  I have not strayed from the 4000 Abralon surface.

I just tried mine at 600 grit and it was way better than 4000,2000,1000 or anythig else I tried.the ball still motored down the lane and had all kinds of hit but the carrydown still gave it some trouble.I'm going to give 400 a try.

Bud I agree with exactly what you have said.  When the lanes carrydown a bit it does get erratic. I think it's because of how strong this ball is.  If you like to bounce a ball  off dry boards outside then this ball is very good for that!

I agree with the break in period of this ball.  Its about 3-5 games in my opinion.  I had this ball dropped to 1000 abralon and after about 5 games it started whipping past the head pin (this is with minor cleaning btw).  Then I had it brought up to 2k abralon and after 2-3 games that started hooking a lot, now I have it back up to 4k abralon and it covers a good spectrum of oil conditions (from med/light to med/heavy).

I'd say to just give it a chance at 4k abralon.  Burn in the track a little bit, and you'll be happy.

I find that the Black Widow works just fine for me in factory finish. I use it when the lanes are oily, or if they is some oil in the backend. If there's no oil in the backend, move far left, or put it away!

After about 12 games or so, I threw mine in the Luster King for 5 minutes.  Made all the difference in the world for me.  Perfect for Medium to Med/Heavy lanes.  OOB was just to much to early for what I wanted.  But the polish made it perfect.

I might have to give that a try Wylie if I decide to keep it. I've now got about 8 games on mine and have mixed feeling about it. Tried lines from just inside of 3rd arrow to over 1st. I don't have the fastest ball speed in the world (about 14-14.5 at the pins) and I've found the only line I can play with this is 3rd arrow and in. This puts me right up against the ball return on the right hand lanes so I would have zero room to move. Depending on my target line through 3rd, I'm either hitting the dry early causing it to come in high, or hitting the dry late and it'll get back to the pocket, but hit weak. Found I have absolutely zero room to miss left for sure. Right now I'm leaning toward returning it to my driller and having him put it on his used rack for sale. Just isn't the ball for me I don't think.

Deadflush, I agree! I realize that this ball needs a heavier amount of oil to work properly. Our lanes put down medium at best and combine that with my slower ball speed.... well, it just isn't going to work. I had read a couple of posts where people have used this ball on med-light conditions which you probably can if you throw the ball 17+ mph.....
