Question about Raw Hamemr Toxic
« on: June 18, 2007, 11:43:03 AM »
I'm pretty much a beginner using house balls. I decided to get my own personal ball so i picked up a Raw Hammer Toxic. I just have a few questions about my ball and bowling in general. For my Raw Hammer Toxic the center of gravity is slight off to the right (i'm a righty) whereas the pin is located just above and between my index and ring finger. I was wondering what kind of set up this is. I asked for length and strong backend, but when i looked on the website it said my set up is for length and weak backend. I went to ask the person who drilled my ball but he said that the ball was in fact drilled for length and very strong backend.

So my question is how is this ball REALLY drilled for?

In general, how do bowling balls hook and how does the pin and center of gravity help the ball hook?

Note: 14 lbs

Well this layout is all based on what your PAP distance is from the PIN.  So it's hard to tell how this is drilled for you if we don't know your PAP distance.

For me that pin placment is about 5.5" from my pap. This layout gives me length and a really strong back end reaction.

Find out what your PAP is.  Bring the ball to your driller and ask him to find your PAP.  You will probably have to roll the ball for him so he can measure your ball track to find it.

Since you are a beginner you probably were not taken to the lanes to get an axis point.  Therefore, you were given a ball with a general length drill in hopes the core would take over on the backend and be strong and continuous.

In general this is a pretty safe layout for an unknown PAP.  The only bowlers this wouldn't really work for would be full rollers.

For someone with a low track it'd be closer to a 4.5" pin to PAP.  For a bowler with a higher track it'd likely be a good layout (length and controlled backend) for lighter oiled lanes since the Toxic seems to want to start hooking as soon as it smells dry.

My Toxic is laid out as such - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/view/full/968636_9dndk

If I knew then what I knew now about this ball it'd be laid out with the pin closer to the bridge.  Even with the pin above my fingers like that it still doesn't get as much length as I'd expect from a polished pearl reactive coverstock.

A good reference for how bowling balls hook might be here  - http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kennmelvin/kVideo.htm

As said above, you have a length drill and depending on your PAP and style you should...should see a strong backend. That's how my Toxic is drilled and it's a killer on the backend. I use it in heavy, med oil but I did change the cover a bit .

If you don't see the backend you were looking for, go back to the shop with your ball and talk to them. They should be able to see your track and have a better idea , if needed, to redrill it for you.

Good Luck ! Hope you enjoy your Toxic as much as I do mine.
