Question for Hammerheads
« on: July 17, 2006, 03:07:14 PM »
Ok,

I broke down and ordered me a Widow. Haven't had any desire for Hammer since I bought that early red particle model in the late 90's from Faball. Never did like that ball.In fact noone I tried to give it to liked it either.

Anyway, wanted to give this company another shot after reading all your posts on the big improvements Hammer has made since the purchase by Big E. I'll admit this ball intrigues me between your posts (which come off as extremely reputable) and the BTM review.

I am a 195, tweener (but can play pretty darn effective straight up 5), medium speed. Like most tweener types, i prefer to play a slight swing with a slightly open stance. My current take to the lanes arsenal (not including spare ball) consists of a Visionary Scorcher (Soup only, great condition ball), a Roto RSP (overall great ball!) stacked, 1000 grit, no polish, which I use to open up the lanes on league top hat carry contest conditions, a Smokin inferno pin centered over bridge, slight swing out for send it and bend it not completely dry, and a labled storm hybrid for the "geez I hate to throw plastic in 2006" dry conditions.

I'm contemplating drilling the BW pin below ring, very slight swing to fit over the RSP as the Roto comes very hard off the break. (the BTM prefered stroker drill which I have never tried.) I seem to do better with slight swing outs as the ball doesn't jerk as much as a stack. Any thoughts from those that have thrown this arachnid would be greatly appreciated!

what condition do you bowl on, what do you want the Widow to be used for?

I bowl at the Strike Zone in Vegas as my main house. I actually bowl all around Vegas. Strike zone usually runs the pattern pretty deep, dry boards 5 and out. I'm actually looking for more of an arcing reaction that allows me to swing into the oil, but not trust to bust in final few feet. The reason I say this as I don't think I have ever left as many late breaking, ball behind the headpin, pocket 7-10's at any other house in my life.

Hey Gonz:
I love my Black Widow so far, scores are through the roof with it thus far, and it gives me more area than I've seen with a ball in a long time.  Mine is drilled with the pin above the fingers, and the HMB out to the right of the grip.  If you're going to give Hammer another shot, this is a great ball to do it with.  Also, I'm bowling a regional next month at Sunset Lanes in Henderson, was wondering if you had any info about the house you could share....synthetics, wood? decent scoring house shot? anything else you can think of.  Thanks and much luck with the Black Widow.

Sunset lanes are very strange. Ever hit the pocket beutifully and have say a 9 pin slide over like a deep five pin rather than fall over? Front burns up quick and the oil carries down.

Kind of an odd thing, the lanes and equipment need to be re-done, but the Stike Zone opened a mile or so away at the Sunset Station Casino. This has put Sunset lanes on hard times as many leagues transfered over to the new and beautiful Strike zone.

Haven't bowled there for a few months, but last time I was there, Sunset lanes ended up taking out a lot of lanes and expanding the Renata's Casino in what appears an attempt to get the lost income back.

I'm hoping they will make the investment in the improvements the bowling center badly needs, but somehow I doubt it with the lure of the easy gambling dollar. A shame really, I used to see Wendy Macpherson used to see practice there and sometimes work behind the desk.

Good Luck and bowl big at the event!

Thanks for the info.  Sounds like a lot of the houses regionals seem to be at these days.  The best always seem to figure them out and figure them out the fastest, that's what killed me in the last one in Visalia, when the first transistion hit, and I got totally lost.  I think I have some better equipment now, and a better idea what to expect, so hopefully better things await.  Good luck with the Black Widow, and many big scores.

Lately due to work down just one handicap league per season. This past year Mondays at SZ. Previously have bowled at Gold Coast, Texas and Sunset. Not like when I lived in Cali. Back then I used to have more time and would bowl at least one handicap and one scratch each winter. I would also bowl ABT or some form of local house tournament most weekends. Rotating house/shots every season can sometimes humble me, especially since I'm not a real high average and often get off to slow starts to each season while figuring my best carrying reaction. That being said, I always felt that is what makes you improve over the long haul.
