Title: replace the original widow
Post by: irishfan on January 28, 2010, 03:07:51 AM
I am looking to pick up a new hammer to replace my original black hammer widow that is worn out.  I have medium revs at best and throw 17.5 to 18mph on average.  I throw a straighter stoker/tweener shot and not a cross lane bowler.  I am not up to date on the new hammer line so I need some opinions from people who throw them.

Thanks

I haven't heard a lot about it but I think they used the original widow's cover on the Raw Hammer Jacked.

I think your best option at replacing the original Black Widow is in the Columbia line.  The Full Swing resembles the original BW very closely as far as I can see.  It's really clean through the heads with midlane read and strong pop off the spot.

I appreciate all the suggestions and the Jacked does look appealing.  I will do some research on the Columbia as I know nothing about them.  I have always been a hammer loyalist and still have my burgundy hammer from my youth.  However, I will use whatever works best.

I did not know that about Columbia.  I obviously haven't been keeping up on the industry and what is what anymore so I am glad to have a board like this to ask.  If I want a stronger ball for heavy oil but with the same hook pattern as the widow, then what would I be best to look at?  The Full Swing or Jacked still fit that arena?

Thanks

I would think maybe the jacked would be the closest to it, you may have to adjust the surface though. As far as columbia goes.. The power swing may be the closest to it, the full swing will be much stronger then the original widow.

Full Swing is a Widow on roids and the Pure Swing is a Venom on roids, as far as ball reaction goes.  The Jacked is going to be slightly weaker than the Widow was and the Full Swing is going to be slightly stronger than the Widow.  So it just depends on which route you want to go.  IMO.....the Full Swing is the best ball on the market nobody really knows about simply because it is Columbia.  The Widow, Gamebreaker, and Full Swing are ALL very close to each other in terms of oil handling and ball roll/reaction.

The Full swing just looks so plain... looks like a house ball.. haha

Take the Sting up to 4000 grit and you'll be very close with a tad more pop on the backend. Stick with the Gas Mask core because there's nothing like it.

Agree with Gazoo 100 percent. Drilled a Sting for a teammate and took it to 4000. I had to do something cause he kept borrowing my original during league. When I wanted to throw it I had to ask permission to throw my ball. Just kidding(sort of ). I have thrown both side by side and they are close. Have a Jacked now and love this ball on fresh backends and then switch to original Widow when the oil carries down some and heads start to go.

If your not dead set on staying with hammer or the hammer family, I would take a look at The Break Out by 900 Global I have one drilled exactly like my black widow was and the reaction is dead on the same. Just thought I would throw that out there

I am a dedicated Hammer user and have had 3 Original Black Widows.  I just replaced the 3rd one with a Black Widow Nasty and in just 2 weeks have absolutely fallen in love with it.  I throw about 17-18mph and am a tweener myself.  I had it drilled with the most aggressive layout and I still get pretty good lenght with it and a devistating backend.  You will need some oil to get the length however.  If you typically bowl on dry lanes you won't want the aggressive layout.  Anyways my first three series with this ball were 257, 258, 241= 756/ 300, 245, 290=845/ and 239, 300, 231= 770.

The Black Widow was my favorite ball of alltime, but the Nasty is quickly taking over that title for me.

I was told that I need a ball that has a lower RG and nothing above 2.50 and a high differential but I don't know a lot about that arena.  I am also a high track bowler and my track line is about an inch off my middle finger or closer.  I appreciate all the advice and welcome more options please.  I have been reading up on the Columbia line since I do not know a lot about them and have narrowed down my only Hammer choice as the Jacked if I stick with hammer.

Just my 2 cents on The Sting...I added some polish to the ball like an idiot and couldnt break 570. Hit the ball up with 2000 (not 4000) and bust out 290-222-260 last night. I agree, stick with the has mask core
