Shared covers
« on: August 10, 2007, 05:08:45 AM »
The other thread when way off course on a good subject line..

AS FAR AS I KNOW...

They will NOT be sharing cover stocks. Ebonite has owned Hammer for quite a while and they DID NOT share their covers. The resin were different formulas for each company.

The BW had (has) the VR covers along with a few of the other high end Hammers, but NOT one Hammer has the GB covers. Same holds true for Ebonite. Not one Ebo ball shares any of the covers with Hammer.

It just makes sense to keeps the brands separate as well as the covers..

I don't know anything for fact, but why can't Ebonite call it X, Hammer call it Y, Columbia call it Z?  Unless you have the ability to break the coverstocks down, you have no idea if the formula is the same.

Each company can spend $1million on coverstocks, or they can take that million, divide up amongst the 4 companies, then each company has $750,000 to use other expenses

Or Ebonite spends $1M on coverstock development and ends up with a half-dozen formulations that they like.  A few to Hammer, some to C300 or Track, a few to Ebonite,...

Dan,
If you do that, why bother having different companies? Just make everything Ebo and call it a day.

People like chioces and different brands

That's what I meant, you take the cost, divide it among the 4 companies.

Why not?  If you can sell 4 balls vs 1, which would you choose?  If people THINK there is a difference, they are going to spend the money.  Cover dictates the highest percentage of reaction.  What the companies don't share, which is provable to the naked eye is weightblock design/construction.  Your average bowler sees the picture, which is obviously different, so they think they are getting a radically different ball.  Ebonite saves money by taking one coverstock and spreading it around to 10 different balls.

It just doesn't make sense to have four seperate R&D departments.  Or to have 1 department that has to start from scratch depending on which brand they are working for.  Developing the new equipment is a huge chunk of the budget.  Ebonite is privately held, but I'm guessing they still have stockholders, in which case, those stockholders are very concerned about profit.

If Storm can use the Reactor coverstock at every level of performance, what would keep Ebonack Hammumbia from just tweaking a couple base resin recipes and sharing it amongst each individual company?

I'm sure Storm has a way to tweak Reactor so the coverstock found on the Agent isn't the same as it is on the Tropical Storm.
